Wow, that's amazing.

Looking forward to the updates.

Oahu to Kauai is about 135 k on that route.

All the camping stuff too? Wow.

Starboard needs to make some bigger boards for this guy!

He did the around Maui paddle on a 12-2 (with camping stuff).

Yikes.

I wonder if Connor will join him on this one.

Sleeping on the board at night.. That's going to be tricky.

Jonathan's got the same board (new 14' OpenOcean).. He should forget about the 11 cities paddle and join Bart on this..

Bart has survived the first night sleeping on a SUP in the open ocean... which included motion sickness!

for those interested his blog has been updated
(sup-crossing.blogspot.com/)

comment from the blog about crossing the channel between the Big Island and Maui...

"Bart reached Maui, June 22nd 2011, 10:45am
Bart just reached Maui, after a very brutal 14hour paddle through the Alenuihaha Channel with wind always from the side, sometimes changing to the front. And when Bart says brutal, it was very brutal. Halfway through the channel last night he thought he won't make it to Hana, but to Lahaina instead. "

Now this is what you call all loaded up:

If you re-read Dagmar's post, it doesn't sound as though Bart did any sleeping yet. She said he left at 1 am, paddled 14 hours to get to the coast of Keanae this afternoon. She said he suffered sea sickness as he battled side on and headwinds in the alenuihaha channel. He was hoping for the wind to calm down tonight so he could rest before the next channel.

Amazing journey. How he gets any rest on a 14 footer (even with the outriggers) is beyond me.

The weather is looking very good. Steady trades, no heavy rain forcast.

Amazing he is on the home straight....

From the Blog
Bart's position, June 26th 2011, 12:49pm
...and closer. His arrival time will be around 5pm, if he can hold the amazing speed he has right now. Chris Jensen, from "hawaiistream.com" will cover the TV part of the arrival for Hawaii News Now, Dennis Fujimoto covers for "The Garden Island" newspaper. Soleil and I are soooooo excited. I am jumping out of my skin. ......

I didn't realise he had already started it !! Well done !!

Jacko, how were your shoulders after your 24hr marathon? I suspect, probably OK, as I suspect pushing at 120%, pounds on the shoulders extremely more compared to holding a steady cruise at say 70-75%.... ???

If anyone has an update on this please post it.

This is truly epic and inspirational. We need more people like this having a good crack at life. I am reading a book (Around Madagascar on my Kayak) at the moment about this guy, Riaan Manser, who paddled a sea kayak all of the way around Madagascar (5000km) in little under a year. It never ceases to amaze me at what the human body/spirit can achieve when it is really pushed to its limits.

More of it...

Here's a vid showing the finish/end.. hawaiistream.com/2014/09/video-player-custom-background/298/ ..after five days and five nights..

Well done Bart.. Awesome effort.. 17 hrs on the last leg and just getting in on dark.. Sheesh.

With arm around wife and a tear in his eye he says that it's the hardest thing that he's ever done and that he will not do it again..

..then his daughter quickly says thank you..

Now that is the best, truly inspirational and at the same time crazy. Sort of makes all these other races like Molokai pretty insignificant...well done Bart

Well said!

comments from the morning after....

The Morning After, June 27 2011
How is Bart's Morning after all this days of paddling?
He slept great. His feet are looking very very bad, sore, swollen, infected blisters. 5 days and nights in salt water took its toll. There is no way he can wear shoes or slippers right now. He is very very skinny. We have to feed him very good today. His hands are swollen, but not as bad as his feet. Now he needs a great breakfast.

Thanks everybody for your support and kind words. It was a great challenge and the hardest thing I have ever done but also very rewarding. I hope to see everybody at the doctor race next year. Aloha, Bart
