See below the boards I was talking about by Dan McDonald DMS (Currumbin).

I mentioned that Dans new 8'6 would be sub 7kg after sanding. It turned out 6.8kg. Note in the pics no pinlines etc as was an initial experiment. This board has been ridden for 2-3 weeks with wax and has been cleaned off to stick on a grip. Still looks brand new. Dimensions 8'6 x 28 x 4. EPS, Bamboo, FCS Quad. Fully customisable.

This one turned out great and the one below with pinlines is a custom for another bloke that owns another very high profile surfboard company. Dims 9'4 x 28 1/2 x 4 1/4. Weight inc grip 7.8kg.

The last one is a shortboard made the same way just for colour of the post.

There is a great article on Dan in the latest Surfing World also.

Disclaimer: I rent space off Dan McDonald for my own business, I have no other affiliation with him financially but he does let me do my stupid experiments in his factory wasting his resin and making a mess of his factory. I also like his free mind when it comes to design.

Nice looking boards.......think I need to hit the running track so I can ride one that small! I read that article and enjoyed it. Infact I enjoyed the whole issue. SW is certainly one top mag these days I reckon. Hats off to them.

Great looking boards , tells us bit more about the overall design , how heavy are the people riding them.

I'm not the shaper but with a quick look over them they are basically a shortboard influenced design in rocker, razor sharp tail edges and rolled rail and deck just like a shortboard. Dan also makes boards for C4 and Honolua also. He along with Dale C and Woody Jack make amazing boards here on the Gold Coast.

The bottom is a Single double concave on both but could be whatever ordered custom. The Bamboo sucks up into whatever design is shaped into the EPS with vacuum bagging.

That's probably the essential bit of the story. Most people believe that with vacuum bagging you need rocker tables etc etc and that labour costs are blown out of the door. Hence most laminates etc only coming from Asia.

Dan is a very clever guy and the bit I like about him the most is that he is not always willing to accept common thought or theory if he can work out how to do something himself with lateral thinking. So the way he applies the Bamboo is not super labour intensive and will not cost the earth. The surfer gets to have his cake and eat it as well.

Dan is about 75kg and the 8'6 is his own. The 9'4 feels too big for me in comparison to my normal board at 85kg. It was made for an experienced mature gentleman ex pro around 80kg.

I always wondered - why do you guys not use wax? Especially ex-surfers?

It would be like waxing up an aircraft carrier how many blocks of palmers do you recon you could use on a 9fter

BTW nice looking boards, great construction

Wax feels great and I use it only on my shorties now no tail pads. Had a magic board without a pad and just gone that way since.

Wax on SUP simply melts in the sun when you stand up for a while, it is exposed all of the time. Also takes a lot of wax to keep 'em grippy.

Ah, of course.

So no-one's interested in alternative grips? Surely full EVA (or whatever it is) foam deck grip weighs a tonne?

It occured to me afterwards that if this thread is a plug for Gold Coast shapers it needs to have Secret Agent made by SUPSA honcho and wonder paddle racer Peasey in it. Don't forget Noel Graham's shaper Emery also in it also. Don't forget Lahui Kai with Birsey and the boys @ Dolphin with the new Deep label also. Not to mention a trip to the Sunny Coast with Tully @ Laguna or Pete @ Classic Mal.

Geez I love living somewhere where there is so many great choices. Great SUP specific shops that sell all of the best labels (local and production) a bunch of shapers to choose from, great weather, great waves, races every 2nd weekend and the best looking girls in Australia.

Once again nothing against imports, I live from importing stuff.
