Sanur would be your best bet for a beginner to intermediate SUP'er. Its reasonably clean and has nice long waves right out in front of the Sanur Beach Hotel. Sanur is good as you don't have all the hassling from the locals trying to sell you stuff and is quiet and relaxing.

You can hire SUP's from the Rip Curl surf school located on the beach just next to the hotel. Paddle out to the reef is about 10 mins, just under a Km.

if I can say something that doesn't sound like advertising but could be useful...
The last 2 months we have been experiencing quite allot of wind!
Is been a strange weather pattern and is been almost impossible to SUP in waves in this side of the island..
Normally even in the South East trades we usually get plenty of morning when at sunrise is super glassy and the wind would pick up around 09:00...
But this year the wind is been blowing day and night for long periods!!
Since 16 of June the wind hasn't stopped except one early morning that I missed....
So to cut it short I would suggest to stay on the west coast of Bali specially if you are coming in the next week or so as forecast show more wind..
In windy time best areas are:
Any spot on the Bukit (but crowded and not easy waves) as the waves are sheltered by the high cliff.
Seminyak around the Kudeta, wind is still a bit off shore! Good at low tide.
Batubolong, Pererenan and Canggu where normally wind start a bit later and can get some good morning (can be quite crowded and nasty surfers).
Balian and Medewi are also quite good as wind fill in usually even later.

We should get a break now for 3 days and hopefully will get the chance to try my new JL Stun Gun... Tomorrow morning wake up at 06:00!!!!

And as Jankie says, Kuta side is the best side atm for Supping ...

... another thing the boys at www.bali-standuppaddle.org/ start very early morning and they have the best boards for rent and teaching on the island....

This time of the year need to get out at Sunrise for no wind...
( i think rip-curl dont start till mid-morning-ish, & only have old and crappy boards)
