Would be great if they opened up the long distance race to everyone, it could be a huge event!!! NZ opened up there Nationals and a heap of Aussies had a great time from what i hear. I understand the surfing side only having Australians compete but for the racing side of the sport nothing looks better than a huge group of people enjoying themselves, and to me thats something that will benefit the sport.

Other than that it looks like a fun 3 weeks!!

Yep, pretty much every other paddle sport allows anyone to paddle in the marathon events for the Aussie Titles. It's only costing them money to not take the entry fees.

i'm going to send a email just to point out a few things that can only help with the sports growth. One thing also is the cost is $110 per event which is pretty crazy but if they opened up the long distance race at least then they would get more entrys and could maybe reduce the costs of entry's a little which can help every one?
Would love to know what $110 get you as thats pretty close to the cost of some of the biggest events in the world with 20'000 prize money!!

$110 bucks = Joke.Surfing Australia seeing SUP as a cash cow.I know ill get red thumbed for this but hey i dont give a crapSUP needs to stand on its own away from an organization that has surfing as its number one priority , which is fair enough too.Otherwise sup will be eternally the poor cousin.I remeber the organization that tried to start and got slammed , but actually put on good events with good prizemoney and low entry fees.

No red thumb mate, SQ is miles behind the when it comes to SUP. I agree that there needs to be a national SUP body next to SQ equivalent that would run events properly etc with more support to the SUP community. I was going to enter a 3 way interclub comp, but one of the clubs did not recognise SUP so they chose not to include in the heats for the day.

Can't think of anything better than having the racing open up to everyone!
I think I'll email them too (regardless of the fact I probably can't race this year).

Just an idea... but if they still want the state qualification path to keep its meaning and prestige, you could always restrict eligibility for the actual National Title and Aussie Team to those who've qualified for their state team, and let everyone else (from Australia and overseas) compete for fun and/or for the win! What's everyone's thoughts on this? Would any Aussies who didn't qualify via states (or weren't awarded official wildcards) be disappointed if they weren't eligible for the title or team?

If you get double the number of entries, from opening it up, surely that will cover the cost of extra water safety and a second set of trophies for the overall race winners, as well as the Aussie Champs? Not to mention helping grow the sport.

Mate the surfing is $160 per category, this means I will be up for $430 to compete in my 3 events (2 x surf, one BOP)! This is just a rip off I'm afraid.

Unfortunately not joking, it is up on the Surfing Qld website, $160 per division for Surf and $110 Racing. Hopefully they will add a multi entry discount for 3+ events like the NSW titles had ($165 for 3 events form memory).

This would be a fair option for those that qualified at State level and would still make it a good race when open to others.

With Surfing Australia's tendency to pull out wild cards to ensure they send the team they perceive to be the best, if someone was to miss qualification through states but then blitz at nationals, surely SA would overlook the state qualification path. They have ignored national titles results in the past so they'd have no hesitation in ignoring the states.

Perhaps in future (not this year) they could allow open entry (no qualification) to everyone but they must go through a first round knockout heat (surfing and BOP). However, first and second from every state in every category receives a seeding and automatic passage to second round.

With the Marathon, I think you could allow open entry but all entrants must have completed the distance at state level. This simply ensures that the water safety crew are not tied up rescuing people who never should have gone out in the first place.

Maybe King of the coast should be a UNOFFICIAL Aussie Title for downwind SUP because there are no board size restrictions it caters for everyone a short and long course and a great location.
Or it could be added to the ever growing list of World Championships. It would be awesome to have an event that you know will be on every year at the same time of year and can grow into a race with the prestige of some overseas events eg. Catalina,Maliko,Cline Mann,Molokai to Oahu.
Entry fees need to be good value for your money and it would be a great advantage if the organisers have a interest in the sport.
I vote SWANIE to make this happen

The Doctor is great, and I will go back and do it again. Sydney has Ocean Series with the 20 Beachesas the big finale. But its also great for us Queenslanders to have and annual downwind marathon event here which we can enjoy without the cost and stress of the logistics involved with travelling interstate and organising boards etc to race.

I've done the last 3 KOTC races, and even when conditions aren't perfect (or you get a good downwinder then hit the outgoing tide in the river for the last 3km), the event has always been well run, made the most of the conditions on offer (even if it means a last minute call on the course), and accommodated SUP's, with a shorter course option and a decent head start from the skis in the long distance. Was a pity it didn't happen last year, so hoping I can get back into training in time to do this years race.

Okay but let's not go assuming that an Aussie title, unofficial or otherwise, must automatically occur in Queensland. The Doctor has no board size restrictions, is on the same time every year, and has the prestige of some overseas events - just as you called for. To cite travel costs to WA as a knock against the Doctor - well again, not everyone lives in Queensland, and the poor buggers in WA are expected to travel without complaint. I'm sure this KOTC event is very good, but the Doctor is a bucket list for many of us.

A bloody good question, over the last four days I have tried exhaustively to ring the organizes with "no luck" and it seems the paddle community doesn't have any idea!
So to answer your question.......... I don't know but my feeling is, its off!
I'll keep ringing around on Tuesday and post anything info...

"3 x World Class SUP Events" - one of which only Australian's can enter...well you can't actually even enter unless
you qualified through your state round. That was my understanding anyway.

So are Surfing Aust/QLD taking entries for any discipline at Nationals?

The Surfing Australia National Titles presentations will be on the Sunday evening - 6pm at Currumbin RSL. There are no other presentations on the schedule so I assume that will be the presentation for all surfing and racing.
