Was in desperate need of a new leggy the other day and was told there were no more calf leggys in stock, so I'd have to go for the ankle version. I knew there was something I hated about ankle leggys but couldn't quite remember exactly what...... so I bought it.

First surf was all good (smallish waves), then yesterday went out in fairly sizey hollow waves and was quickly reminded of what I hated about ankle leggys - you get absolutely pounded when you go over the falls compared to a calf.

I think it must be because you put up less resistance if you are dragged by your ankle, got some brutal hold downs in conditions that I would normally be totally sweet in.

Anybody find the same thing?

Also, anybody want to buy a near new legrope? Only used twice!

Calf leggy also much better for cross stepping. Always get tangled up with ankle leg rope.

Beware of the calf leg rope SUP surfing.

It has taken near 12 months for the lower tendons below my knee cap on the inner side of my leg to finally heal after too much repetitive strain from a calf leg rope.

The strain was originally felt after bailing my board several times at the shore break end section on a solid beach break wave whilst surfing on my back hand.

Surfing a reef break several days later again on my back hand I came off my board and the board kept going and the strain and pain was huge.

Only wore the calf leash for a few weeks due to a strain in my ankle, ended up with a knee strain.

Sported crutches for a few weeks.

In my opinion beware of the calf leash.

Interesting how u got pounded more with the ankle .. U would think it would be less as the board has an extra 2 feet too get away from you

I have used a calf leash for the last 4 years of SUP surfing and never had a sore knee. Ankles are thinner and have more moving parts and less muscle surrounding them so would seem easier to tweak than a knee in my view.

Anyway, the point of the post is not about which type hurts your knee/ ankle most, but is about how long the hold downs seem to be when you compare ankle to calf leash, and I reckon I strongly noticed that difference a couple of days ago during my surf.

I'd be keen to hear from anybody who takes on fairly large waves and has tried both types of leash to see what they reckon. Not that I'm looking for anybody to convince me either way (because I can make my own decisions), I just thought it would be an interesting conversation topic.

I have found the opposite, I can recoil the leg when using the ankle (bend my knee ready for the pull of wave therefore reducing tension) but I do concede using knee leggy when small waves and riding longboard sup would be advantages.

There be monsters out there - I went over the back of one but the board went over the falls. I think the size of the board plays a part - 10'6" of surface area skull dragged me a long way and as a result of an ankle leg-rope I got a buggered ankle. To be honest the ankle was a little bit buggered from a surfing injury a few weeks earlier but had nearly healed. Now I'm learning to walk again. I'll switch back to a calf leash until the ankle heals. The question that I have is whether it would have been worse if it had been a straight leash rather than a coiled one?

if youve not tried a waist leash, give it a go---no knee strain, and the hold-downs are way shorter--the waist leash tends to pull you up to the surface, instead of dragging you under leg first--and if you move around on the board alot, the leash hangs free, away from your excellent footwork!

I used to use the calf rope but found that it was fraying the stitching on my wetty around the knee.
I now roll up the wetty leg up , put the ankle rope on and roll the wetty back down over half of the leg rope strap.
600 bucks for a flash bomb made my mind up.
