Does anyone have much experience travelling overseas with SUP boards? We are thinking of doing another Bali trip and would like to take our own SUP's instead of shortboards this time. I think they are way oversize (10 x 29 Corban & 9'5 x 31 Naish) and we have no chance with Jetstar but really can't find anything out on Air Asia.
I know the obvious answer is to hire a couple of boards (which we will more than likely do) but sometimes it's nice just to ride your own board using your own paddle.

Air Asia have no problem with board size, they charge a premium for surfboards with a weight limit (can't remember what it is) then a set amount per kg over.
I took my SUP to Bali from Bris with Virgin in Dec no extra charge as it was my only luggage and under 25kg.
Hope that helps,
Nick

Virgin is the only choice when it comes to overseas Sup travel. We have never had an issue when flying virgin anywhere in the world with our Sup boards. X Angie

Hey mate, Yeh we flew Hawaiian last yr but never had any sup's with us, i think hawaiian are pretty good aswell, as long as it's not over 11ft. On virgin each piece of sporting equipment only counts as 5kg of your total weight, providing each item isnt over 23kg or 25kg, i can't remember.
I've never been charged excess by virgin ever, and i've had some serious kite gear baggage with me a few times.
On the way back from California on Virgin Australia we had a sup and so much luggage but they never blink an eyelid at the sup. Didn't even weight it LOL. Love them.
I've flowen vigin within Oz with Sup's gear never been charged anything.
I guess when your boss (R Branson) is a Kitesurfer & Stand Up Paddler he likes us all to his airline.
I've even been told that i could fly with a raceboard 14ft from goldie to perth but i never tested that one out yet.
My mate fly's for virgin and even he said, as along as you are flying on one of their planes with a 6m cargo hold up the front, you can take a race board for nothing!!! Nice but like i say, i've never tested it out yet LOL.

XX angie

Thanks for the advice. Have the choice between Jetstar and Air Asia, so looks like Air Asia wins this one.

guys a few issues to note..

arriving to Denpasar airport the restriction is 3 boards too every punter , don't bring more as customs nails you ..

wether wishing to rent or bringing your own , certainly bring your own paddle along as this is gold & when the waves turn on you want your own stick in your hand for sure...

Garuda are fine also , just watch the weight limit..
