Hello friends,
I'm after some advise...
As I'm not getting any younger my body is kind of falling apart!
The last couple of months I have been quite allot in the water and different pain are arising!
First was on my shoulder.. By using a softer and shorter paddle I almost got rid of it..
Now are my elbows!!!
After doing a web search looks like I got the Golfer Elbow!!! But I do not play golf...
Pain come from an inflammation of the ligaments on the lower part of the elbow kind of where is the little sticking bone..

Net doctor's advise is to take aspirin and do cold wraps...
I have been out of the water for few days but is not really getting any better!!

Any suggestions?
Maybe I should go back to long paddle?
Bye Jankie

Maybe alternate days with each paddle.
Might also be worth changing tecniques. At one stage I had some pain in a elbow and I seemed to narrow it down to me backpaddling instead of doin a goofy foot tail turn
Still havent mastered it properly but no more elbow probs.

My thoughts anyway. If I lived where you are Id try anything to sup all day.

Hey kitesurfbali,

I've got the same thing in my left elbow, had it for well over a year and can't really shake it....but - this helps! Also make sure that you are not bending the elbow of your lower hand at the end of the stroke. Make the paddle stroke with your torso not your arms.

A few medico, physio people have told me the same thing, recurring tennis or golfers elbow just like any tendinitis is caused by inflammation and scaring of the actual tendon, the scarring causes the fibres to become a jumbled mess and not aligned with the tendon. If you get a light weight, maybe 1 or 2 kg at the most (start light), sit down so that your forearm is at 90 degrees to your upper arm - rest the back of your forearm on a low table or even on your thigh. Then grab the weight in your hand, let your wrist drop right down, below your arm, then slowly lift it up. Do about 20 reps - I do it with both hands to keep it even. Found a video, mine is sore now and I haven't been doing my exercises!! Thanks for reminding me

i had the same injury last year. my physio fixed it with this method.

take a small weight, about 500 grams to start with. something with a loop that can go around your hand will make it easier. stand up with your forearm held at right angles in front of you, similar to how you would when doing a bicep curl. let the weight drop so your arm straightens out and catch the weight again at the bottom of the motion. as you catch the weight flick your wrist backwards and straighten your fingers (this is where the loop around your hand will help).

what this does is loads up the problem area and helps to strengthen it again. i had to do it 200 times per day. it hurts like hell but over the course of about 4 months my elbow came good again. as you get used to the weight then you can increase it.

i still have elbow trouble every now and then and it's been over 12 months since i injured it. keep the exercise up and it should come good.

definately go and see a physiotherapist about it, cos the sooner you get onto it, the sooner it will get better.

hi, i've had the same thing myself on occasions. shoulders, now elbows. it's not the type of paddle or lenght or whatever- it's a technique issue as i stated on your shoulder post. trust me, i've been through it myself. if you can find an expert that knows how to teach/explain good technique i sure your problems will disappear.

there is no quick fix with a newer/shorter/longer/flexer/stiffer paddles.

paddlings a bit like golf- never mastered and there always be good and bad form times
cheers

Hi
Also try massaging the tender area. Use your thumb and work the general area and a bit more on the problem spot. Dig the thumb in and just rub back and forth across the tendon. It can get a bit painful while massaging but generally feels better afterwards. Over time it should improve, but always good to get professional help. cheers
