Hi SUP people.

Without sounding like an idiot I need your help in giving me some positive or negative feedback on sup deck grip. Ive been lucky enough to sign up with the a brand called "Arcade". They've been making killer tailpads /fins / leggies for awhile now and they want to make a SUP full deck grip. I need all your feedback on what you guys would want in a deckgrip and what we are missing (DESIGN etc). Theres not too much out there on the market and want to use this forum to get something good out there. Thanks for your help.

Cheers Appsy

If you copy OAM (on a mission) deck grip you can't go wrong
It has to be the best grip on the market IMO
-not too thick
-heaps grippy
-doesn't go slippery like a few other grips on the market
-built in tail pad
-good glue
The only thing wrong is it gets a bit pricey, I think it retails around the $200 mark, you do get a fair whack of grip though, too much for a shorter sup

The only deck grip worth its money is the C4 deck grip no other grip comes close

Agree 100% it's a really aggressive grip they don't seem to wear , my favorite pattern is this criss cross one and the glue is sensational never had a failure or lift.... the cut out arrows in the grip so you can see the stringer is a great idea making it really easy to lay. I've used this on 5 boards now the oldest board is 3 years old and the grip is still great.

Not that anyone would ever 'copy' each others grip though eh. Or leashes, or covers etc.

Downwinder is WRONG.

I have a board with C4 and it does not compare to the OAM grip which is IMO no doubt the best grip in the market.

Only downfall of the OAM is that you need to modify it a bit on the tail for wider tail boards, not hard to do.

I have tried;

You're all wrong. The best grip I ever had was a couple of sheets of 5mm EVA that I got a length of pine and a router and cut my own pattern into it. I bought it off a guy that sells it to jetski riders, yachties etc. Great quality material.

Backyard technology is always far advanced IMO. It's amazing how you can make things just how you like them when you do it yourself!

Most grips stop 2/3 way down the board from the tail, and most people I see on the water add more grip at the front for nose riding or stepping forward to get the board going.

What it missing is standard 2/3 grip with additional arch of grip that can be added to the desired length.

Maybe a cutting guide on the reverse for some common profiles.

-some different colours maybe?
-small logos are fine but the big in your face logos that i see on some grips look crap.

No one has mentioned the weight of the stuff. I use the creatures stuff and only run as far forward as where I stand - it is quite light. The side bumbs are good when your learning but unnecessary after that IMO. I would like one with the same weight and grip but with out the side bumps.

Have used the PSH stuff and it is super grippy but very heavy, which if you have a 6 kg board is not the best.

Nah mate, not unnecessary after that, on a short, light board they serve as a good little carry handle

I'd like to see an arch support all the way down the middle. I think it'd be good to have something to lock your front foot onto - like what your back foot gets with a good tailpad.

hey casso, you need some of those velcro booties. i don't know about all the way up, but most sup decks could use a longer arch pad. with sups being wider, your back foot can get a bit lost as to which side of the board it is. i try to work on diagonal foot placements when turning ie front foot on the outside rail, back foot on the inside. a more pronouced arch and a bit longer up the board would help with feet placement for me
cheers

the grip on the board just purchased is black 6mm thick with 6mm grooves straight down the length of the board .

ugly but simple and very effective. [ not that Ive ever had any sort of grip before to compare it too]

would be better with diagonal grooves to shed water I would have thought!!!

yer ditch the arch idea as your feet move all over the place from rail to rail nose to tail well maybe not into the slip zone up the nose for me[}:)]

i find that on steep waves my back foot will be biased to the inside rail when coming off the bottom (sometimes with the toes hanging over the rail dragging in the water) and as you transition to come off the top i will shift it to the opposite side to engage the outside rail

can you arrange a pretty in pink grip for me appsy

well you got plenty of support from the locals, but my 2 bobs, why waist 150 - 200 hard earned dollars on dgrip when you can apply wax , for $3.50.

yeah, thats what i'm talking about. the arch just helps find where ya foot is.i try and go one further like if the toes are hanging over inside rail, i try and have the front foot on the opposite outside rail, hopefully that gives you that fine tuning control
cheers
ps the 8'9 psh has is a pretty flat decked board and sometimes i had trouble knowing where my back foot was

Thanks heaps everyone for taking the time and letting me know what you guys like and dislike. There's some really good feedback. I really want to get a grip out there that everyone can use. Trying to get the grip out before the end of the year but its a long process but ARCADE is keen to support stand up surfing. It seems to me a few surf company's still aren't sold on the idea that we have a genuine sport.

And no DOGMAN pink is not an option in grip. Although I was thinking of printing a massive big photo of your fav pop all boy band "Boyzone" on a grip for you. I know you would love nothing better then looking down at your feet and seeing four handsome young men looking right back at you hahahaha.

Just a thought and if you're wanting to get out a grip by the end of this year it's not helpful for your immediate purposes but...

had you guys considered looking into deck grip materials that don't take on water as most of the weight from deck grip seems to come from when they are water logged.

Also you will never please everyone with one deck grip- only option is to provide multiple options.

As far as my preferences- can't stand deck grips with channels that run all the way down- prefer the squares like creatures and OAM. Also reakon Logs is onto something with the triangles- I think C4 are already making deck dots...

Good luck with it all

Thanks heaps, thats one thing we are working very closely on WEIGHT! Ive used grip before that make a sup weigh alot more then it should.
