5 months ago i brought 2 sunova flows... 8,7 120 litre and 130 litre 8,10

I am very comfy on the 130,i can easily get out the back surf it pretty good and generally catch any wave that comes my way ...but

when i jump on my 8.7 ..i just cut it to pieces and can pull off moves that i use to do on my surfboard ...

down side is ,at 98 kgs it is a wobbly little board for me and do fall off quite a bit ,i don't use it much but would love to use it more .but always seem to take the easy option of grabbing the 130 .

should i pack my 130 away ,and just concentrate on getting use to paddling my 120 ...as i feel that it might be the only way i can progress
and get use to riding shorter and smaller volume boards ...as everytime i jump up to the bigger board,i feel restricted to the type of moves i can do ..the 130 is a great board but it does feel like a lot longer board at 31 and a bit wide and being 8'10 it has a bigger swing when throwing it around ...

am I stunting my progress .?
and should i pretend i have just the one board and put some paddling time in to get use to this radical little wave machine .

OR get a 125 in-between custom ? AND 30,5 wide ..i not sure what it is that makes this 8,7 board feel difficult to ride
the 30.1/4 wide or the volume ...I have come from 2 years of riding 32 wide boards .

why the hell am i so fussy.i'm sure I'm not alone searching for that perfect board.

I'm close.
merry ho ho.

So if the 130 feels a bit too comfortable and big with you at 98 kegs, and 120 feels wobbly but fun, either eat a few more pies and the 130 will be perfect, or a few less and the 120 will be perfect. Or spend $2k on a custom Flow @ 125L. Pies are cheaper.

What sort of 'progress' are you wanting?

For most of us we do this for fun.

Having ridden both sized flows I don't reckon there is a massive difference between them. Neither surf anything like a surfboard can!!

My recommendation would be to go for the one that gives you the biggest wave count, have seen too many that go for the smallest board because of ego, and just lose the stoke factor.

your right there is a massive difference ...i just love the way you can throw the 120 around ...I might go back to paddling school
and sort out my balance ...what sort of progress you ask? just wonder if I'll ever have the balance ...or does it take some time
the 120 is the smallest board i have ever owned ....no ego with me ...
I surf a lone a fair bit ...or with prone surfers ,,,sure is easier with the 130 to get more waves ...every surf is a stoke to me .
thanks damo....good advise..

another question ..how long do most people stick with the same board ...
I'VE had 4-5 different boards in 2 years ...i reckon if i stick with one that i reckon is good and learn how to surf it and know it
i will be a better surfer...its been a long search ...and finally coming to a end .

Hearin' ya.
My 8'10" low volume custom flow arrived and it looked amazing. And it is an amazingly well put together tough product.
It is comfortable. Which is great.
I have tried a lot of different fin combos to get this board to work for me. It is built to floooooow along from the middle.
It loves a steep face. And c drive quads. And thruster set up with a smaller centre. And getting it's ar5e stomped on.
One of the best old boy prone long boarders I know, Paul Melrose, said to me "If you're not enjoying it, get out of the water". I try and live by that now.
The search will never "end" tardy. And if it does, I'm out.

I agree with you that fun is the main factor and this is what I do too. But I reckon that smaller is the board more fun and stoke it is because a small board goes closest of the curl like a short board does.
Still extra buoyancy is a confort to catch wave from far away the peak but to not forget to take some risk doing some radical manoeuvres.

Yes Tardy put some paddling time in to get use to this radical little wave machine

I'd be keeping the 8'7 (it is the 8'7 isn't it?) and changing the 8'10 for something else, maybe a Steeze 8'10 (if they do one in that size) or even a Shroom 8'3.. I just think the two Flows you have are too close in size to inspire you to improve your style.
Go on a diet too
But seriously if you dropped a few kgs that smaller Flow would become your go to board, you say you can throw it around already so why not continue to do that and more..

Good dilema to have though..

Hi Tardy.... put the 8'10 away for a while and get intimate with your 8'7.... it won't take long.

Silly to think custom over 5 liters.... I fluctuate that much weight difference from 1 week to the next.

I was riding my 8'10 Flow at 108 kg and full wetsuit gear on clean days.
You should adjust quickly to the 8'7.... especially if it engages the pie hole blocker unit.

I think once my nephews who are beer drink guzzling pombs leave ..i hope to get down .

i think your right supthecreek ..i need to work on my skills...
I'm going on a sup surf trip in may and would prefer to use my 8,7 .if possible ..can only take one board.

Getting better skills is always a great idea...but how and what???
One way is to shorten your paddle length. helps with balance, paddling etc on a smaller board.
