I spent a couple of hours this morning on the 14' Edge in testing Port Philip conditions, up to 3' of confused, quartering swell and a rising wind. Interesting. The board went nicely in the flatter sections of the run up to about 1', it's very quiet through the water and surprisingly stable for 28" with no rocker. In the following/quartering swell on the outbound leg it was good, even picked up and ran nicely on some small runners, but on the home leg into about 12-15knots of head wind and 2-3' of confused, quartering chop and side swell it became a handful. The crazy-deep, sharp nose and deep rails were wind-affected and tended to get pushed around by the meatier chop, the thing got a bit corky and weird even with my 120kegs on it, really had to keep the power up an drive it hard to it to keep it all working. So today probably wasn't the fairest test of the board, at best I'm a gumby in rough water. That said I've had to work harder to stay upright on some other boards in similar conditions. My experience in lumpy water is fairly consistent with this guy http://epic-boardsports.com/race-review-of-the-14-coreban-edge/ .

I'd love to try the Edge again for a distance run on a nice, calm light-wind day and put the Garmin on it, the calmer sections of today's run hinted at it being a quick unit in flatter water, especially for the larger paddler. Finish and build quality are superb, It's very solid and stiff with no discernible flex at all. In carbon/kevlar it's surprisingly light and easy to carry for it's big size (it has the best handle ever and the handle is in just the right spot!) and the factory board bag is well-padded and very well thought-out with extra handles for portage.

That looks insane . I would hate to get run over by it, some serious R&D dollars have gone into this baby. This is my guess on the side is to channel water flow , it would also help counteract broaching from the nose and keep the board tracking straight. IMHO
