just some tricky questions.
i've got a recreational ski that i use in the surf and according to marine transport officials i've asked, i don't need to wear a pfd as against someone in a surf yak.
if i use it on the onk, west lakes etc i been told that i do need a pfd as it's then classed as a kayak even though it's unsinkable like a surfboard or sup being a custom styrene/carbon job - as against a hollow sit on top or kayak
is the 400m from shore non pfd zone you mention in your post "officially" recogonised as the surf zone?
i know that yaks, skulls and outriggers officially training or racing at west lakes are exempt from pfd's and did this apply when you didn't require them at your last race on the onk
when i sup at west lakes i don't wear my pfd but can i claim i'm doing "unofficial" personal training

the reason i was asking you was that i had never heard of the 400 mt business so i assumed it was some new definition of surf zone. i used to work at Whitworths marine at the port and i'd question every coast guard, sea rescue, marine official that came in and it was hard to get two answers the same.
the safety regs seemed to be open to individual interpertation!

just in case anyone is interested, the SA marine safety handbook book only mentions 400m from shore in relation to sail and kite boards. inside 400m pfd 1,2 or 3 must be worn, outside 400m it must be a type 1
if you class a SUP as a surfboard then along with surf ski's they don't need any type of pfd no matter how far out you are - so the surf zone thing i was told was wrong
however as soon as you're on inland waters which would include the onk, pat, west lakes, encounter lakes etc a surfboard rider (SUP?!) or goatboater must wear an appropiate, approved pfd. it doesn't say type 1 so i assume that if water skiers can get away with 2's and 3's then so can a SUP'er
all this is on page 47 of the handbook under the section on exemptions from standard boat safety requirements
so, when i SUP and ski on the life threatening ocean i don't need a pfd but when i cruise around a benign west lakes, i'd better buckle up
