Looking for people's experience on the choice of fins available for 12'6 race boards please
Specifically - either good or bad:
Size of fin?
Shape of fin?
How does the position of fin in track affect the board?
What's available from where?
Any pictures would help also. Thanks.
IMO... Just get a 9" (or 8"-10" depending on tippyness and tracking) dolphin shaped fin placed forward in the box and you can't go wrong.. ![]()
I like the look of the new JM (Jamie Mitchell) fins from Future Fins so if you think a normal dolphin shape is too boring check out the new JM SUP race fins.

Thanks DJ. Why forward in the box? Surely this would make a board track snake more, but be easier to step turn without stepping too far back? Am I on the right track here?
Seems a lot of boards and riders favour an axe head shaped fin - as per the new red Fanatics.
I have found that most race type boards track very well due to the rail shape, bottom shape.. and board outline and tail shape.. and it's often turning them that's hard work.. so moving the fin forward helps some.. If you have a board that doesn't track well then moving the fin back will help.
I'm not a fan of the dagger style fins unless they have some curve in the end (like the JM fins) because they tend to dig in and catch if they touch.. even in soft sand.. I'd also keep away from deep fins or fins with heaps of rake unless you have seaweed issues.
I think the dolphins got it right..
.. btw.. I would not call the new Fanatic fin an 'axe head' shape fin.
I don't claim to be an expert on all this.. It's just my own thoughts and I'd love to hear what others think.. Here's a pic of the JM fin.

I had my 13" Future Fin DW/Race fin in my 12'6" this morning on the Yarra River. Important note to all paddlers - don't go anywhere near Dight's Falls at the moment. Turns out they're doing some work on the area which has drained the river level by 2 or 3 feet. Consequently, the water level is less than 13" deep over a rock bed at some points. And the Yarra is so delightfully colourful and rich with nutrients, bacteria, filth etc etc that you can't see the rocks even though it's only 13" deep. Or less. As I found out quite painfully this morning. Anyhow, this is a 13" Future Fin...
