Great Pics Rob, looked like an intense race with the conditions.

A question, why are the top guys all on 12'6"s for a DW race? I have just gotten hold of a 2nd hand 12'6" and love it for DW but I assumed most of the top guys would race 14s or 17s.

Prize money!!! The biggest prize pool was put up for 12'6 class for both mens and womens in line with a lot of the Elite races overseas.

from my understanding, and could be wrong, is that BOP would be the biggest SUP race/prize pool. It is 12.6 for the main event. Some of the overseas events have gone 12.6 due to travel logisitics I think, so atm this is the most popular size and attracts the money. The ISA world titles has gone with 12.6 also...so I guess that means the pro's will focus on that size.

this is by no means a statement on best size for an event. IMO that would be 12.6 for surf/BOP, 14 class for flat water sprints and down winders and a unlimited class for DW....just an opinion

Interesting point the first 6 places were all on a 12-6............. 7th & 9th place were both on unlimited boards. Could this race result be the beginning of the end of the longer boards ...????

I don't think it's the end of the long race boards by a long shot, maybe things to consider about why the style of board was choosen had something to do with what Ali said (greatest prize money) and the fact that some of the top guys and girls are off to Peru in a week or less time to compete on 12'6 boards. I think if circumstance were different (same prize money for each catergory and no ISA World SUP titles) you might find that more people may have raced evenly across the board. Also something else to think about is that the majority of people have 12'6 at the moment until they realise that 14'+ are really made for downwind IMO.

Too true... and where people only want to have a single board, a 12'6 lets them have a go at any race (even if it's not as good downwind as a 14') whereas a 14' will exclude you from BOP races.

On a side not, regardless of the categories or the prize money, with the swell we had on the weekend i'm pretty glad i was on a 12'6" not a 17' trying to get in and out of the surf zone.

troy mainly had the money on the 12'6 s because most of the guys would have had their 14'ers still in wa.

if you want to dw get the 14'er.

seriously, these guys are really good, most of us aren't.

asked travis about this one time and he said we are making them go fast.

the general public are still going to be off on a 14' er for starters

cheers
