Hi

New to SUP, average surfer about 75kg. Looking to buy my first SUP, but like anything there doesn't seem to be a one board quiver. Aiming for 60% surf, 40% flat, but looking to have fun, build paddling technique etc. So those of you who say I should go and get an 8ft Hokua or Prowave, dont waste your time. Legit and helpful suggestions only. Mates have been pushing me twoards a Nalu 10'6.5 GT and say it is as close to an alrounder as there is - easy to paddle and great to surf. They also say that when you get good at it and want to buy a shortie, the Nalu will be a keeper.

Thoughts or other options - Starboard/JP/Fanatic? Also, apparently there are new Nalu's coming in soon, anyone know if they are different - worth the wait? Nalu GT's seem to be a bit harder to come by at the moment.

Thanks in advance.

Absolutely can't go wrong with a 10'6" to 10'8" All Arounder. Personally I wish they made the 10'6" in a rounded square tail but that's just a personal preference. No one's going to talk you out of buying a Naish but I would also recommend looking at some medium known brands too. You might find a similar quality for slightly better price value. You get what you pay for as always. Check to see who demos in your area and give a few a ride.

As for waiting for the 2014 edition boards I'd look for a 2013 on sale. The new boards won't be discounted at your local shop and won't provide a beginner any major differences. Buy new for the warranty and always support your local shop. Best of luck on your quest.

Thanks Bob. Leaning towards a JP Fusion or Starboard WP just for funds reasons. Almost $2k is a lot of $, particulary when i could go out and buy two cracking surfboards for that price.

Hit up the JP dealers and specifically kite shops. They often have a lot of extra JPs they want to dump this time of year so ask for sale pricing. I also noticed a lot of shops this week are having end of financial sales on old inventory.

I personally started with a 10'8" on sale from a mid priced Aussie brand and love it. Will keep it in the quiver and use it reguarly for flat water/small surf. I'm now searching for a wave specific model and will be keeping a close eye out over the next few months for another value deal. You should be able to get everything you need for under $2000.

At your weight have a look at a nsp 10' save a few bucks, tuff as nails, surfs well and flat water paddles.
