Hi Team,
I have been impressed with my 9'2 allwave this season but i feel like i am ready to goto another level. I weight 91kgs and i am 5'8.
I was thinking of going to a prowave? Do you guys have any recommendations?
I tried one when they came out and found them very tippy. They are definitely for a more advanced surfer which you may well be. I moved from a 9'2 to a 8'10 allwave
and love it. I'm a bit smaller than you at 78kg but I'm 64 . I also put a good set of fins on the board and found a really big difference.
I love Allwaves and intend to keep mine for a while longer
. I've heard nothing but good reports about the JP wide bodied boards. At your height and weight I'd check out the Allwave and JPs 8'6" up to 8'10" and the Prowaves 8'10" and 9'2". The Prowaves are much more susceptible to instability if there is a lot of water moving about or crosshore and strong windy conditions.![]()
I have the 9 6 and started a quest on the same road.
Tried the Hobie CP Torque, Tippy.
Naish Mana 8 10, Tippy, yet loves the face.
Starboard Wide 8 10 Quad, very nice, stable well worth a look.
JP_Australia 8 2 Quad, wow. Stand out. Look it up or the 8 8 may be more suited to your size.
Just a thought or two. Best bet, talk to your local shop/s and ask for a demo. Best thing about SUP's is that they offer that option.
Then see what works for you![]()

I too like most things about my Allwave, and I asked the identical question to a retailer recently, they suggested the 8'10 Wide Point, mainly for the more refined rails offering a bit more surfability. After a bit more research, this is what I will be looking to demo for sure, or even the 8'2. I am 84kgs.
Definitely post up your findings once you have been able to try a few and make the decision, be keen to hear how it goes.
Scott.
I'm 98kg. 8'10 pro wave surfed awesome, but it was a little tippy in choppy junk.... I'd also test an 8'6 Fone manawa.... It's a good thing. I'm going custom next...
Howdy, I have an all wave 9 6.
tried the JP Surf Wide body 8 2 and found it a stunning board. Awesome. Stable as the All wave, good to paddle yet turns on a dime on the wave. Like it so much, I have one order!
Sorry guys been flat out with work but i have lined up for next Wednesday a demo on a 8'10 pro wave and a 8'8 JP Surf Wide Body. I will report in how it goes hopefully conditions allow for a good test?
Had a crack on the fanatic pro wave 8"10 today. Well that was an absolute failure. I can moon walk on the allwave 9"2 but could not stand on this board for more than 5sec. I caught a few waves but this is not the board for me i will need at least a 9'3. I am going to try the 8"8 wide body JP next.
Thanks for the follow up mate, will be interested to hear how the JP goes. Have you looked at the Starboard Wide Point - 8'2 or 8'10?

Let us know how you go with the 8'8.
I am riding the 9'5WP at the moment but have a couple of sessions on the 9'2 Allwave in the past and the 9'2 Allwave is way more stable.
I have a few more KGs on you but i am thinking of sticking to similar length but a bit narrower so i want to demo the 9'2 JP for better turning.
Have paddled the 8'2 WP in a wind chopped bay put no waves didn't fall off felt stable but could be different in waves.

Hi Mr Rothwell, my advice is purely selfish but might be a good option if you have some money for a board that could last you a while!
I've been following the talk on an American forum and researched info about Original Simsups (that's their trade name). If you Google it you go to their website, they are in California. Have a look at their demo videos. I think my next board might be one of those puppies.
They look to have five fin boxes, so you can run them under any configuration and they say they will customise at virtually no extra cost. It's around $1250.00 for a board and when I emailed them they said they could ship to OZ for around $300.00 to $400.00. So Lets say $1700.00 all up with a board delivered to your door. The feedback from the American forum (The Stand Up Zone) suggests that they are extremely stable and because of the strategic concaves and rail design very loose when on a wave. Major problem is that you can't demo unless you go to the states and some people are worried about the lack of rocker.
Have a look at the site. I reckon someone is going to make a fortune importing their boards to OZ and NZ![]()
. I'm around 100 kg, and 184 cm (6'.1"), so reasonably similar dimensions. I'm quite fit though I've had a laminectomy and now it looks as if I might need a hip replacement as well. I ride a 9'2" Allwave and my Neurosurgeon says that SUPPING has helped my spine healed almost perfectly. I have excellent core strength apparently which in turn has let my spine align very well. Once I get my hip fixed I should be ready to rumble.![]()
My orthopaedic surgeon said 8 weeks off the board completely, flat water for a couple of weeks and then go for it with in reason!!
I reckon without shortboard SUPPING I'd probably be a cripple by now so I can highly recommend the shorter style of boards with plenty of width as they actually make you concentrate on correct upright neutral stance rather than speed stance.
Therefore I reckon you can justify the Original Simsup purchase as orthopaedic health equipment!!!!![]()

I might try and claim it on my health fund????

.) Have a look at the website. I'm thinking for my size 8'8" or 8'10" by 33" or 32". (probably around 150 litres). Hope this helps with your pleasant yet perplexing conundrum
. Maybe one of their standard boards or an 8'6" x 32"???![]()

YES there is news Scotty! Put the order in this afternoon for the JP Surf Wide Body 8'8.
Sunday had a demo with about 50 other surfers in the water. A little wobbly out the back at first. There was plenty of water moving around but only ended up falling in twice.
Finally a wave came through with my name on it, three stroke of the paddle and then i took off! Literally it felt as though i had been riding my Allwave with the hand brake on. It was really surprising how fast this board is! A couple of turns and then a close out.
Next wave i was ready for the acceleration. Took off across the face, the board turns really easy and feels very light.
Third wave was what sold me. A really good face let me explore the turns a little further. With a lot less effort the board turned on a dime plus i kept the speed.
I have been looking for the next step and this is the board.
Put the order in this afternoon. Apparently they are going like hotcakes.
The only problem is i have to wait till July for the board to come in, Bugger!
Great news mate, well done.
Did you consider the 8'2 wide body at all? Doesn't really seem to be much difference between the 2, on paper anyway.
Thanks,
Scott.
Another satisfied JP customer.........well to the club, albeit your a junior member....
(based on size
)
Demoed the same board I suspect Rothwell
Have ordered the Pro Edition which is coming in the same container
Matt from the shop has also ordered same I think
Will see plenty of these boards on the water if they can get the boards in
Baysup, what are your specs - weight, experience etc? Did you get a chance to try the 8'2 at all?
Thanks,
Scott.
Thanks Shire SUP and Bay SUP see you gents out on the water. I got the pro edition too.
Scott i did not get a chance to demo the 8'2 but my feeling is that the 8'8 for me is as small as i would like to go this time. You are lighter than me and i think you would be fine on the 8'2. After the demo i was thinking time to lose 5kg!
I have the 9'2" allwave and also looking for the next step. That 8'8" JP widebody is one I am considering. Wish I could demo one. I will be looking for more feedback as you have more water time on them. Thx

I have not seen one here is FL.. Looks like the "Original Simsup" is built in Santa Cruz Ca. We are doing a Calli trip next week, so if I get the chance to demo one I'll let you know how it goes. Been reading about them too. Lots of threads about them on the other sup forum.
I'm taking the allwave with me, but hoping to demo several of the boards I've been reading about.
I currently have the 9'2 Allwave and have been on it for about 3 months and am very happy with its performance. I may have the opportunity to step down, sooner than expected, to the 8'10 but just wanted to know if anyone can compare the two. I know they'd be quite similar but with all the talk about the 8'10 I'm just interested in hearing comparisons on glide, stability, surf ability etc. I think STC might be able to answer this? I'm 36, 5'11, 95kg and have been supping for about 3 years. Cheers.
I have a friend coming on Sunday that has a 9'2 Allwave... I will get in some time on it and let you know my thoughts.
I am pretty excited about the idea... there was a time that I thought the 9'2 was way too small for me![]()
Much appreciated STC. I too never thought I'd be considering such a small board having started on a 11'6. Look forward to seeing what you think?
