Hi Guys, I am new to SUP and wanted to get some tips on what to look for and look out for.
First of all I am a windsurfer but currently recovering from a broken elbow. Hoping that a SUP can get me on the water and exercising again and recovering.
I am looking for a SUP that can double as a winsrfer light wind board and potentially has a centreboard fin box for when the kids want to learn.
I have seen a 9'something JP one that is close to what I want. Is there anything out there that I should be considering. Hoping to get into waves when there is no wind about.
What's the deal with the paddles and why are some so expensive. What should I get?
Leg ropes. Length etc....
I got started on a starboard element 9'8" 30" wide. This is a good all-round board. Like anything you generally get what you pay for and I would suggest a carbon paddle. This should suit your needs. Don't know any of the other brands with a mast fitting.
All the best sup is fun but demands time on the water.
The Angulo Surfa has a windsurfer track.
I recently tested the 9 ft x 31.75" wide and found it exceptionally stable and easy to ride. Worth testing it and the 9'6".
The Naish 12' Glide like in my vid would work well for you.. You really don't need a centerboard.. even in very light winds.. I don't think you would ever use it.
For more wave riding the big Naish 11'6" and 11'4" both have a mast base insert.
Starboard have a few boards that you can windsurf and they even have one with a centerboard if you really want one.
I was down Mordy way today and that's not far from where you are.. We should catch up one day and I can arrange some demo boards for you.. PM me.
As for paddles.. There used to be cheap crappy/heavy paddles and then very expensive and super light paddles.. Well now you can get some very good paddles and quite cheap.. Buying a very cheap paddle is like using an old heavy fiberglass mast compared to the modern light and stiff mast.. It's very noticeable.. IMO.. ![]()
