G'day SUP crew,

I'll start with the fact that i've not stepped on a board yet but;

I'm looking for advice on a board for myself and a board for the girl. The only facts I have to go off right now are those I find online. I know what i'd like in a board (recreational flat water paddle and occasional, maybe getting frequent, small to medium surf) and so far through internet research the 2013 Naish Nalu 10'65" GT fits the bill very well. I want to hear about peoples experiences with this board and also answer a few of the below questions. Also on the same track was thinking of the 2013 Naish Alana 10'65" for the girl. Here's our stats;

Me: 175cm / 78kg / High Standard of fitness (if that matters)
Her: 167cm / 53kg / High Standard of fitness

Questions;

1) GT or GS construction? Have the money for GT. Wondering about build quality, durability, possible ease of repairs etc.

2) How it glides, handles, holds a line etc. going out for a decent, long day of flat water paddling?

3) That size Alana for my girlfriend and if that's an appropriate choice?

4) How the GT surfs in comparison to the GS model, turns, holds a rail in the pocket etc.?

5) Any issues people have encountered with this board?

6) Any SIMILAR boards (not just your favourite, ha) that you feel will fulfil what i'm looking for.

Answers to these questions and input from people who have experience with this line would be appreciated. I do understand the necessity to get out and demo a whole range and will be doing just that. Just wanting to get in early and get myself on the right track from the onset so I know what I should be looking at. Rather than mindlessly turning up to demo days and lessons with no clear idea of what I should be paddling on.

Cheers guys and girls.

I recomend the 10'6".5 Nalu for yourself in the GT construction and the 9'5" Mana (Alana) for 'the girl'..

Both excellent boards.. No issues.. Both paddle flat water great.

I also recomend the 8" blade paddle for you and the 7" Alana blade for 'the girl'..

The Alana boards only come in the 9'5" Mana and the 10'10" Nalu... and maybe an inflatable.

The GT construction of the 10'6".5 comes with a board bag.. Better fins including side thruster fins (the GS only has a center fin) and the GT has a wood deck and slightly lighter and stiffer.

The 10'6".5 is faster and more a performance board.. The 9'5" Mana is a bit more stable and an easy surfing fun type board.

I've done a couple of vids paddling my 10'6".5 in tiny surf.. Here they are if you're interested.

There is a 10'6.5" Alana. Its exactly the same board as a GS 10'6.5" Nalu, but with the girly paint job.

There is also a 8'10" Alana which is the same board as the 8'10" Mana.

The 10'6 is a great board for both cruising & surf. I have surfed one in shoulder high waves & loved it! They have a concave deck which adds stability.

My girl has the 9'5" Alana & she loves it but she only paddles flat water.

My 2 cents would be get both the 10'6.5" boards. That way you've got the same glide when paddling flat water. If you're on a 10'6 & she's on a 9'5 it will be harder for her to keep up with you if you're both putting a bit of effort in.

As for build quality of GS vs GT, I have 2 hokuas in GT & a 11'4" Nalu in GS. Nothing wrong with either IMO.

The 10'6.5 GT is a little lighter than the GS and the GT has thruster fins and the
wood consruction makes it stiffer and IMO surfs better due to these facts.
I luv mine it surfs great and is just as good on the flat water a perfect allrounder.
The consruction of the Naish boards is second to none

Yeah Hi, I'm a SUP newb, but long time surfer. I hired out a 10'6.5 GS a couple of times (6 surfs) and it seemed pretty good - stable, caught small waves well, etc. I ended up buying the 11'4 GT. Only ridden it a handful of times yet, but seems to surf more or less the same as the smaller board (only been surfing mush on either of them). Both paddle well in chop and the surf, although the 11'4 is obviously a bit better for my 100Kg. And yes the GS only as the single fin, which may or may not matter to you.

I haven't had the opportunity to compare boards much, but I suspect the Nalu's have a fair bit of rocker in them, so might be a bit slower paddling flat water than others??? not sure about this but I'd be interested if someone else's comments.

I was dead keen on a starboard 11'2 Blend, but I heard the deck grip can be a bit abrasive for the kids knees, etc. I never actually got to feel up one of those Blends, so went for the naish as I knew it would be good as a first board. I reckon at your weight you've got a heap of choice available to you.

The 10'6.5 has a flatter rocker than the 11'4, it actually paddles very quick and straight compared to other boards

I just bought a Naish Nalu 10' 6.5 GT and am new to SUP, have some surf background.
This board has a flattish Mal style nose rocker, with more lift towards the tail.
This gives the board good paddle speed and easy to turn for such a big board if you use your back foot to spin it around (I found it hard to accelerate from stationary in the surf but I believe this to be lack of technique, once going no problems.)
As I said a great Mal style shape and rides like one as well.

Sounds like good reviews all round.

The question of stability in the girlfriends board is no real factor, better balance than most.

Zeus the point of having boards of equal length to achieve similar glide when out together makes a lot of sense. Have you noticed that yourself when paddling with your partner?

DJ have you had any experience with the Naish Vario paddles? I understand that the varable length paddle is a matter of preference but seems a good option for paddling in differing conditions. Good vids BTW, where abouts are you there?

I was actually looking at the Starboard Drive as well but have heard much better reviews of the Nalu.

Thanks for the good returns guys.

The Naish adjustable paddles are very good.. Get the small blade (7-8") and skinny shaft (what the Alana paddle is) and they have a nice flex in the shaft.. also I've never heard of one breaking.. My only concern for myself being 6'4" is that once fully extended to the length that I need I found that the locking colar on the shaft was pretty much right where my lower hand was.. That shouldn't be an issue for most people... I recomend putting some electrical tape around the blade to help protect both blade edge and board rails.. I forgot that Naish have increased the Alana rainge of boards this year and doing it for the 10'6".5 is a good move.. I also recomend you both getting the same board.

Yeah it can be an issue. I have a few boards so I just take a shorter one when we go together.

I am yet to buy my first board.. however have recently been training in the river with a group in Perth and in also with friends occasionally.
I have tried 5 boards now and am pretty set on the Nalu 10'6 GT from reports and comparisons... (although I actually havent tried it yet!)

I'm 90Kg and I have tried...
12'6 Fanatic Falcon
12'6 Fanatic Fly Race
Starboard Whopper
Starboard Blend
11'0 Fanatic Fly

I am looking for a board to use for BOP training, river work and can take to the beach to catch waves and terrorize children. And have spent hours and hours lurking here, and reading reviews etc etc.. and am fully set on the Nalu 10'6 GT.

This weekend I am pulling the trigger, I am so pumped and will get back to you with verdict.

Well you've got 7 inches on me DJ so I can't see it being an issue. Think because i'll want to get in the surf the adjustable will make sure I can use it for both flat water and surf with comfort. Little pricey but rather pay up front and be happy than cheap out and have the feeling of buying something you know is mediocre every time you use it.

Don't think i'm ready for two boards before I own one Zeus so i'll be taking the tip onboard and buying something for my girlfriend that doesn't make paddling together a chore. Whole point is a lifestyle, fitness orietated hobby that we can do together. 10'65" Alana is great for the ladies.by all reports which is good.

Keep us posted Darth.

Earth to DarthSUP - report on the Naish 10'6.5" please?

To everyone else -
I understand that Aus is completely out of stock of this model at the moment?
Is this because it's such a good board, general growth in the sport, other supply issues?

I'm sure it's because it's such a popular board.

HeyDJ, Loved that 3rd video, especially the music. Ahh memories. Cowabunga!
Hey WannaSUP, I trialled the Naish 6'5" on flat water and the surf and loved it. Ended up with the Laird, only because it has a finer rail and I'm about 73 kg, but really hard decision. My girl is on a longer board, 12' so when we paddle together on flat water, I have to work hard to keep up.
Cheers

OK fair enough... guess where I have been however.

So I went down the board shop here and they only had a GS in stock. Obviously with money burning a whole in my pocket and burning desire to have my own board - I couldn't wait 3 weeks - so bought it!

Since then I have been riding it at every opportunity so feel I can comment from a place of experience.

The Board
----------
Looks great, the grip deck on top is super grippy without getting in your way. The carry handle is a little back from centre and more to the right when looking top down. This is a seems odd, I am sure the R&D department came up with a reason why but for me it seems I am fighting to keep the nose off the ground when walking with it.

Quality so far seems excellent - can only comment on the finishing of the board.

The River Test
--------------
I do BOP training and fitness training on the Swan River. BOP is quick sprints, pivot turning around buoys etc. Here I find the board handles beautifully, I can get her up to speed quickly, the stability is great and she can turn beautifully with some pressure on the tail. I beat the Whopper (same experienced male rider) and Fanatic Fly all rounder.

It cannot compete with the race boards of any type... it simply does not have the glide and "cut through" physique of these boards. This means I am on the look out for race board (second hand).

The Ocean Test
---------------
Only paddled in small waves and chop, pretty **** conditions really. I am a real novice wave catcher and it seems to pick up on them with out trying. Here is where I need to comment on the stability. I read about primary and secondary stability and was unsure what it meant. Boy do I know now.

The stability on the board is excellent (doesnt mean i dont come off) however the primary stability is low - that is it seems tippy. There is a lot of movement (I dont know the correct term) in the pitch - a bit like a skateboard with the speed wobbes..
HOWEVER the secondary stability is really high. i.e you can get some mad angles doing some crazy balancing dance and she wont tip, you really need to be right off balance for her to throw you. I think this is excellent.. it is help teaching me balance while being forgiving and not throwing me every time.

Float
----
When I bought the board I was 95kgs... I am now 91kgs. It makes a slight difference but I am absolutely at the top end of this board. My feet are wet from the moment i am on, and with any waves/chop etc the nose is under. I have seen friends jump on and it sits much better.
So if I keep losing the weight it will get better and better, however I think 90kgs should be the max for full enjoyment.

Overall
-------
I am very happy with it, and can see why it is a keeper. I do see myself growing out of it real quick and using individual boards for individual conditions. However part of my plan was to have board that my wife and daughter (eventually) could use and join in. Here I think it will come into its own.
I would recommend it 100% for someone less than 85kgs, who wants to cruise and surf good conditions who doesn't play with chop and race boards.

I think I have covered everything so....

Any questions?

Earth to DarthSUP - good man, thanks for the report.
Between you and DJ's info (who is that masked man?) I think the Naish is my favoured choice so far - as much as it can be without having paddled one so far.
Looks like I've just sold my ski (to WA - I'm in Melbourne!!!), so this will help with funding a SUP, and convincing the wif that yes I really do need to add to the collection of 1 remaining wave ski, 1 remaining skiff and 2 surfboards...my version of a mid life crisis over the last 10 years.
So I'm off to the Sandy to Cerberus paddle on Sunday to make a nuisance of myself and to ask more silly questions...who know, maybe someone with a Naish 10'6.5" will offer me a paddle???
(BOP training...wtf??)
