Ok - its common knowledge I have been a bit of a suploveho of late but when I put the Suplove 8.10 on my roof the other day at greenline I was fully convinced that I was gunna have to be polite but find excuses why it just wasnt my kind of sup. Afterall it was everything I hate in sups - under 9ft/under 29" wide and pointy nosed - it just wasnt gunna be my cuppa tea.
WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG WRONG
First little outing in currumbin creek on saturday arvo with the dog on the front and catching tiny little waves on the sandbank in the middle of the creek and not falling off
Hmmmmm whats going on - a stable 8.10 and I'm having fun bashing about in the flat and roaring around catching tiny little waves and boat wakes and feeling like a bloody 10 y/o grommy !! I think I was kidding myself though that it was gunna be just as easy in surf - but what the hell I didnt care I was just really having fun on this little beast.
Monday morning very early - off to an old stomping ground with bumpy but really really nice little knee to waist high peelers ripping through and couldnt get the baby suplove off the roof quick enough.
I was a tad wobbly paddling out in a fair bit of side slop but didnt fall off and soon got the sealegs happening and then no dramas at all. (ok fell off a few times throughout the next hour and a half and bailed on a couple of bigger ones but no-one saw that so it didnt officially happen)
Quite simply - the most fun sup I have probably ever surfed. Yep have been on higher performance boards and better paddlers and more stable boards, but none that cover all as those aspects in just one board - to be honest it just blew me away how stable and fast and easy to paddle into waves it was and so responsive and forgiving on the wave - you could really do anything on it and it just kept on going and turning when you want and as hard as you want and the bloody thing noserides as well or better than most longboards I have ridden - I was being a total dick out there hooting myself and laughing and just having the time of my life - jeez what a way to start the day. A coupla fishos just laughed and shook their heads as I paddled past them frothing ![]()
And before anyone that knows me gives me sh#t because I have always been so anti sub 9ft - Yeah yeah I know - BUT - I have never felt this comfortable on a board this small and if I am not immediately comfortable on a board then I tend to not bother with it - thats just me I suppose because life is too short to spend countless hours struggling on sups that are just too small and hard work - for me it's gotta be fun from the outset. This little beauty is all that and more (for me anyway)
When I can get some money together I will definately be buying one of these boards ![]()
Billboard, thats awesome to hear, whats the volume of the board? as they don't have it on there website or if your not sure could you tell us how heavy you are.
No better feeling then a great board under your feet no matter what size the wave.
Hi mate, not sure of the volume but I am 6ft and 75kg. I reckon up to about 80kg for a novice to intermediate would be safe and maybe an expert up to 85ish kg. I don't like a board sitting under water no matter what the supposed experts say. I am certainly no gun supper - I like fun boards and fun waves and this board is just small enough to be challenging but certainly not hard work. My old body is way too broken to be doing it too hard anymore.
Just for a bit of a laugh this morning we put a longboarding mate of mine on the 8.10 at our local beachy - kinda cruel but nothing he doesn't deserve
2ft ish with a bit of a bitey shorebreak but not bad conditions - possibly not the best place for someone whos only had 2 very small paddles on a sup (both over 11ft) and not in waves.
He was a bit wobbly at first and wasnt really sure of how or where to paddle to pick up a wave BUT less than 5 minutes and he was paddling onto everything in sight and really really doing well, getting along the face and top to bottom and even a couple nice little cutties thrown in for good measure. Sure he fell off a few times and went over the falls sideways on the odd occasion but we were really impressed at how easy he was doing it and on such a little board.
In all, 4 of us rode the suplove 8.10 this morning and everyone was I think blown away by how friendly the board was and how much fun. Yes - 2 of the four were very experienced suppers who preferred the much higher performance board that we also had out, but everyone had high praise for this fun little board and when looked at also as value for money, jeez its hard to beat.
i had a go on the board. i hadn't been on a surfing sup for 3 months. i jumped on . wobbled and proceded to paddle out through 7 broken or breaking waves. i should have been off 5 times, but the suplove just keeps supporting you.
the board goes pretty good, yes i've owed or surfed some of the highest performance boards in the land and while it not up to those lofty highs, i've also been on a hell of a lot boards that aren't as good as 8'10 suplove.
i reckon the suplove makes an ideal entry level sub 9' sup. it's stable, has chucky rails which are tucked, not overtly wide so when you are ready to move on to something a bit more ambitious, it's not going to be such as massive leap.as billboard suggested, a reasonable surfer 80kgs and less could go straight to this as a first board with a bit appilication
it appears to also be a very solid construction and the price is nice
cheers
I gotta say M - when you jumped on it in the shallows and proceeded to paddle all the way out I was sure you were gunna eat it bad after so long outta the surf and when I saw you wobble over the first broken wave I thought I was going to get my wish come true but bugger me you just slipped through the next half a dozen sets and I think you even beat me out on my longboard
What made it worse is that you also didnt get smashed in the shorey over the next hour either -you seem to take so much pleasure from disappointing me ![]()
Hung out with Stu all day yesterday so got a chance to demo them all up at Newport. The 8'10 and 9'4 were impressive as was the 10'6. Gotta say I like the white rails with brown/earth camo.
Since my last post on this board I have had the chance to surf it again in much better conditions and I gotta say that the two words to best describe it are "easy" and "fun". Anyone who has been toying with the idea of trying something under 9ft but don't want to struggle paddling around on a rice cracker then give this little beast a try - guarantee you will love it.
hey BB here's a few shots of the groms 8'10 with black rails and camo deckpad. You have a choice of coloured rails and about 3 or 4 deckpad designs. I'm unsure f the exact literage but this model does have full rails, they do look thicker than the 4.25" advertised.
Beautiful Board! 5 fins!!! So much so I can overlook the oddly provocative company name.(they DO sound like a nice small company you'd be happy to support).Wonder how this would float a 100 kg advanced beginner
. And how to get one to the east coast USA....
