I have been using a Kialoa methane for a while now. It's great in surf but depends on your cadence ie how quick you can paddle.I'm 6'3 and 98kg.I have just bought a larger paddle Quick Blade 9" (the meth is 8'' I think) to use on a bigger board and flat water/downwinders.
For your weight and height it would be perfect for surf.Don't know the Shaka pu but Hilly uses one I think. He's good at breaking them though!
I'd go the Methane for 85kg and all-round use. If you were bigger or focussed more on racing/downwind stuff, I'd go the Shaka Pu'u.
I like to match paddles to boards too - smaller than 10'6" = Methane, bigger than 10'6" = Shaka Pu'u - IMO.

Hi,
I am looking into a 7s uber fish 9,8 as a surf board but also a flat water paddler.
I am undecided on the uber fish at my weight 85kg odd as im still a learner.
My other choice at the moment is a C4 10.6 for my learning ability and weight.
The c4 10.6 i presume would be a great match for the methane
I know that at the start of sup it was standard to have a big 11,6 or 12ft to learn with but is this still a standard or these days its best to go smaller and progress on it.![]()
What length do you prefer over 7 or 8 for all round use
Interesting about the paddles, I started with a Werner Spanker then bought a Methane, thinking I'd use the Methane for surf and the Spanker for distance. I've ended up using the Methane all the time, I like the lightness and higher stroke rate for both. Feel like I can actually put more power into the Methane because it doesn't affect my balance or stance - keep in mind that I'm only 67kg though. Find that I can catch more waves more easily with the Methane both in surf and doing a down-winder, so that is covering 9'6 in surf and 14' down-wind board. Ideal world I'd have two Methane paddles, shorter for surf and longer for distance.
