There was a topic a minute ago that got removed, but I have a question for one of the replies that was made about needing a leg rope as long as your board.
I have a 10'2 SUP and a 10' leg rope but was thinking about swapping to an 8' leggie. When I come off the board, I like to bring the board back with a tug from my leg but find with the 10' leggie I am often not able to do that. Is it a safety concern, being that if the leggie is too short, you run the risk of pulling the board back at your head as soon as you come off and apply pressure due to the shorter length?
Note: serious question, not being sarcastic.
hmmmm....I suppose I did answer my own question. 
But is that the only reason to have a longer leg rope? Surely an 8' leg rope will still give you plenty of length without fear of having your board rocket back towards your head? I was wondering more about why the need to have a leg rope as long as your board.....Say for example, your are X' tall and sporting a 10' leg rope, the distance between you and an 8' board will be the same as a 11' board. I would think that the bigger the board, the less you want it to stray too far from you, especially in the surf where it can hit someone else. Granted you don't want it too short that you become a target as well from the recoil.
i don't use anything over 8', i think it comes from shortboards where they always sold you a legrope the same length as your board, the only problem you will have is if you have a 10' noserider and a 8' legrope
On the other hand you see sup guys surfing mavericks with leg ropes anchored to their waists.....am sure their legropes very long
8 ft seems to suit me fine in the waves, certainley would not go shorter.
Seems to be a good length, after a wipe out a quick kick back brings the board close in

The most alarming thing I found about surfing a quad is that when you fall off/pull the board towards you it doesn't come straight to you.....it goes off on its own little journey
yeah you can easily go shorter, unless you like to noseride etc
i ride a 9'3 and use a 5 foot shorty leg rope in small stuff, and a 7 foot legrope in bigger stuff
when i used to have a bigger board that i liked to noseride i used a bigger legrope, but with the shorty style boards it's not necessary

I don't surf a lot but a 9' Balin storm rider does the job on my 9'10 and my (heavy) 12'. Sort of not keen on the idea of a too-stretchy 12' leggie making my kill zone even bigger.
Hi Rob, I use an 8ft Dakine. As HC said it reduces the kill zone behind or in front of you which ever way you're headed. 
I've never had the board hit me on the head, god knows it might do me some good if it did!! On bigger days just as you get your board back to you, you're about to get hit by the next wave in the set!!
I've got 12 foot 8mm legrope......think that across the ditch there are many fewer victims to be found in the "kill zone"
suspect that extra length may reduce fin cut incidence because legrope not so stretched and stressed?
Often just 3 or 4 people surfing
....the 12' length an accident really as they didn't have the 10'
