I'm building a Kaholo 14. I have a 10" fin box and a 10" hatchet fin. Any advice regarding how far from the stern the fin box should be?
Complete noob to SUP but I intend to use it for distance paddling on flat and in ocean &bay to compliment my regular surfski paddling.

Not sure if I can get it that close to the rear. Will measure it up today.
Can I assume that reccomend as far back as possible? Makes sense as I can always swap the 10" hatchet out for a smaller cutaway style fin if I want a looser feel.

IMO.. I would put it about 8" from the tail.. Anywhere between 6-10" from the tail should be fine.
Both my 14' Glides have them about 6 1/2" from the tail and they have a big square tail.. and I always run my fin as far forward as I can.. and wish I could even go more forward.
My 17' Glide is about 24" from the tail.. but it's a pin tail.
Where to put it depends on..
Straighter tracking.. Move more back.
Better turning.. Move more forward.
For me these boards have no problem with tracking.. It's getting them to turn is the hard part.
You also want to stand in a possition on the board that almost has the tail slightly lifted off the surface of the water to get the best clean release off the tail so you don't want the base of the fin exposed if the tail does lift slightly.. Also if you do any down wind paddling the tail often gets lifted as the nose drops into the trough ahead and again you don't want the base of the fin to come out of the water.

This very much confirms what I was thinking and allows me to work with the rear bulkhead/rib of the Kaholo.

I just measured a few of the 14ft race boards we have on the shelf as below. I measured to the back of the finbox. I agree with DJ's comments re tracking and turning. I prefer to run my fins forward for general riding and back for distance racing.

The first three boards are easy to turn, the next three take a bit more effort.
