Hi guys,
My wife and I recently took up SUP and our instructor advised us to go with a Fanatic Allwave. The reviews I've read have been very good.
We want to get one board to share. I am 90k, 5ft 10, my wife is 70kg and also 5ft 10. We will be using the board down in Gerroa on the NSW south coast. 60% flat and 40% surf. I'd like some thoughts on length of board and whether their are cheaper alternatives to the Fanatic.
Cheers and Merry Christmas.
We all say we will only have one board when we start ![]()
Then all of a sudden you see someone on a flat water race board going really fast and a little voice says "hey wouldn't that be kinda fun"
The AllWave is an awesome little board and the other one you might care to look at is a Starboard Wide Point, both are relatively short, fat and easy to paddle.
The secret with these types of boards is go the size down from what you would usually use. I am 5-8 and a variable amount of fat depending on time of year. I use a 9-5 Starboard Wide Point and would easily feel as comfortable on the 8-10, the difference in volume between the 9-5 and the 8-10 is approx 4 litres.
Not paddled/surfed one but if you are mainly doing flat with some surf I would stay away from an Allwave. At your weight you'd be looking at the 9ft 2 version or even 9ft 6 at a push and at that length and with its template it will be sloooooow to flat water paddle and it will constantly want to be straightened. They are wave boards really.
My advice would be (if you are really looking 60/40 in favour of flat paddling) to get an allrounder at about 10ft to 10ft 5inches. Something like a Starboard Drive kind of shape - some flat water glide but also very surfable.
And that's me being objective....I'm getting an allwave next but that is for surfing only. Keep any flat water/small surf for my 12fter.
maybe instead of buying one new board, try and pick up two second hand boards, have a look in the buy and sell section, this way you can go paddling together, your first board will take a bit of a beating as you learn, the allwave is a great board for surfing and paddling imo

Geroa would be sweet on a sup. Go the 9'2. I have one and I'm 100kg and it is more than enough board. Before I got a race board I was doing 5k paddles in the flat........ It's not fast but still a workout.
Yes one for every family member
Unless you don't want your wife out there with you and you just want some serenity then yep just one to share![]()

Thanks all, a lot of advice to take on board (pardon the pun). Anyone have an opinion on a Honu 9'8?
Dunno about the Honu 9'8 but I have a brand new Honu 10' which I can sell to you cheaply...
Misguided present from my wife.
I have an allwave 8 10' (92kg) and I use a race fin in it for flat water. That makes the board track much better. It still doesn't paddle as easy as an allrounder for flat water by I do it for the exercise anyway.
