Does not need to be draw...Last time i stuck a grip on my red 6'5" 28". I've done this way : pull up a middle stripe of protective paper and stick the sheet of grip beginning by the center middle near stringer position. Then trim along the rail with a chisel both side of grip and its protective paper . Drawing a parallel line to the rail can be helpful too to follow the deck line while cutting if you d'ont have pine line to follow as i've done on my board.
When finish to cut out the grip/paper , peel off protective paper and press from center to rail to apply the grip pressing off avoid air bubbles .

The edge of the grip can be sanded in a bevel shape on its outline later on
