For those of us wishing to use our SUP to fish, the addition of an electric motor makes a huge difference. But the 'shop' mounts are quite expensive. I made my own for about $40 using plywood. It goes the same for the outrigger kits which can cost $5-600 or more. Mine cost $75. The materials are all available at your local hardware store. My seat is an old ammunition box I found in the shed. I trialled my 'kit' at Wivenhoe dam and it worked great. You do need calm conditions and no wind though. Don't waste your money on expensive kits - you can do better making these things yourself and it's a lot more fun.

Great job.. Thanks for the pic and info.. I'm guessing the paddle is just in case the motor breaks down.. btw.. That motor looks like it would make great smoothies..

The motor is for trolling for fish!! Cruising slowly in an attempt to have a fish bite. Something the some naughty people from the shortboard and Longboard forums know all about!!! They have may settings and allow you to fish whilst moving at an even pace. Some can even be programmed to do repeat circuits!! I can't stop looking at the set up!! it looks brilliant. Have you tried the board minus extensions and motor in the surf?

Nice work Micky, although I personally like to paddle & glide on my sup without any mechanical/electrical advantage - otherwise I use a boat..."horses for courses" though.

The paddle needs to be used in this sort of set up. It helps to offset the motor being mounted on the side rather than the rear. I trolled today facing backwards. What a hoot! Caught Nothing! But I'm just getting used to doing these things. Caught a lot of Red Claw but no fish. I have flat-paddled this board without all the gear and it was great, and I am keen to see how it performs in small waves.

When not in use on my board, the motor replaces our 'mixmaster' in the kitchen.

Could you send me down a half a dozen Red Claw please Mick. My Dad helped build Wivenhoe so I reckon I deserve it!!!! Seriously though, brilliant set up. Why have a boat when you can do that???. Let us know how the board goes in waves please!! And point of purchase thanks.

I bought mine through Adventure Outlet on the Gold Coast, but the distributor for these boards (also sold under the Liquid Logic brand) is based in VIc.

Ha ha, I thought it said WaterSHake on the mix-master/motor.

Good set-up, tons easier than a tinny & much more versatile!

Kayak paddle for use if seated on the 'throne'.

SUP paddle for standing. All bases covered.

Came home with a dozen delicious sand crabs yesterday from an expedition to the Pumicestone passage. My Versa board has certainly opened up a whole new world for me - and it's all been fun!

We made a outboard electric sup in Newcastle, went well on the back of the C4 holo holo, until it flipped in the surf and we lost the battery.

Could you get away with using just one outrigger?

I think so. There are lots of set-ups that use only one outrigger. This would be ideal when fitting a sail to an SUP. But with an electric motor I think it's better to use two outriggers for extra stability/bouyancy (the motor, battery and outrigger set-up weighs 15kgs). My outriggers are 90mm x 1.2m pvc drain pipe, but I want try 150mm x 1.5m pvc pipes for extra stability. This is important when fishing/crabbing etc.
