Sorry folks I know this topic has been done to death, but what's a forum without stupid questions huh?

I'm 6'3", 100kg and a competent short board/mini mal surfer. My wife has a SUP but I've so far resisted the urge, however I'll be soon looking to get into it. As such I'm looking for some advice on boards. I'm looking for a SUP for flatwater paddling 50% of the time and small cruisy surf (up to 3 foot) 50% of the time. I'm not intending to smash the lip on my SUP, just want something that turns reasonably well and can bottom turn and hold an edge on more hollow waves. I also need something that's going to glide OK for flatwater paddles and is stable enough so I'm not constantly getting bucked off while trying to get back out into the lineup.

I'm not brand loyal, and will spend up to $1500, but ideally around $1200. At the moment I'm leaning towards something 11'6-12'6" simply for the glide / bouyancy. I'll be hassling my local SUP retailers soon but just wanted a rough guide on length/width and potentially a few brands/models to consider from you guys before wandering into the local SUP emporium.

Any advice greatly appreciated. Cheers

Hi Davey, I've got a Naish Nalu 11'6 AST for sale at the moment if you're interested. I'm 115kg and 6 foot. Have a read on the Naish website to see what they say it's best suited for, it's fantastic for a bigger guy on the flat water and would really suit you but maybe not be so great for 3 foot surf as it's a big jigger but you probably have the weight to muscle it around. I actually bought it to use on small days in the surf but didn't have any mates with paddle boards around to paddle with and preferred to just surf on my mal on small days. I'm selling it with a Naish carbon shaft, glass blade paddle as well as a "mule" wheeled buggy and I'd take $950 for the lot.

Some "allrounders":
Starboard Big Easy or Atlas (Atlas might be a bit big)
Coreban Cruiser
Naish Nalu 11'4 or Mana 10
Fanatic Allround 10'6 or 11
Bic AceTec 11' or 11'6

to name a few...have a look over on the "buy & sell" section for some good second hand buying.

Or if you're the adventurous type, consider a 12'6 BoP style race board, you won't get bored on the flats and most of them very surfable if you have some skills

11'6" LSD Bombie Explorer.
Surfs unreal for a board of that size.

I've got the Nalu 11'6 that's a great price for a great board plus paddle, highly recommend it,it's my first board and I wouldn't sell it but just add to it with a shorter one and then maybe a 12'6 and then maybes 14',I think 4 boards should do it....just gotta get the mrs as enthused as me ;)
