Hi all, since I've broken the drought I thought that I might as well go the whole hog and relate my experience of the seemingly much maligned 12ft SupAtx LR. Firstly, it comes with a carbon Fibre paddle guys- a good one, so knock $300.00 odd bucks off the purchase price for starters. This board has been a fantastic addition to my now two board quiver. Any decent waves and I go straight to the McTavish (9'6") but anything less than two foot and this board really rocks. I have caught waves at Willy in Port Phillip at 6 inches +. It would I feel perform reasonably well on a downwinder but my job, my shyness, my wife and kids have prevented me from trying to join one of DJ and his disciples little escapades. I've had a go on a 12' 6" Fanatic BOP board and this seems to have many of the same attributes except less tippy. Obviously the hull on the Fanatic is excellent for cutting through chop, but anything sideshore makes it a little unstable as it is a purpose designed race board.
The SupAtx on the other hand is short enough to surf on the runners and still capable of linking with the next, or following piece of chop (this is from close in shore trialling). From an entertainment perspective the kids can use it as a tanker and diving board. My four year old daughter who was wearing a PFD and doing a tandem paddle with me, wanted to know why the board was moving and I wasn't paddling. I duly informed her that she had just officially caught her first wave. I am around a 100 kg and 185cm and loved getting back to the laid back feel of the larger board. It is far more manouverable than the 11 ft NSP (because of the rail design), I started Supping on and glides beautifully in flat water. I've been reading a lot about the larger name brands and feel that this is a good option for those on a limited budget (I'd still love to own a 12'6" Fanatic or Bark)
but think that for now I'll be happy with the el cheapo -Oh and did I mention the paddle? One warning. they are honest to goodness fibreglassed and therefore need to be treated with a little more respect than moulded boards. Keep a tube of Solar Rez or a roll of Duct tape handy in case of emergency. I think DTM may have said 'it doesnt matter about equipment it's the motor that counts'. This board will let you work on your motor and enjoy doing so while keeping the rest of the family entertained as well!! Cheers Leroy.![]()
Glad to hear your happy with it....sounds like it will be getting a fair bit of work with the family and all.
Sounds like a good all rounder ![]()
