Defeats the purpose of surfing the face of the wave

Good way to get a wave to yourself. I for one wouldn't want to be anywhere near it.....

Naish seem to be doing a better job of it. Kai's video makes it look like fun and the Naish product release looks like a real product.

I would be interested in knowing how the Malolo goes without the foil for all those no swell days.

Similarly, could you get the Malolo into a wave up on the foil then go surfing?

all that jumping and hopping and bouncing.......rabbits and baby goats do it a lot more gracefully

I watched the starboard video again, and really think it's not a good look! They seriously look to be struggling on those waves pumping. It looks like they said quick we need to film our number one guy on one and that was the first session?

And on the wave surfing with a foil, there is a video of Laird Hamilton riding a foil board and it's on big fat waves, that's where they will shine.

If I took one of those out to my local break I would be lynched, personally I thought the hypernut board was crap to begin with, I can see why Starboard might try whack a foil on it and try sell them for 5k +, my favourite part though is how no one can wear a leg rope with one in the faint hope of not killing yourself but more than likely slicing some poor unfortunate person in your vicinity in two.

Starboard must think we are all just bloody idiots by using someone else's equipment and shading it out.

How graceful does that AHD with Bruno look on the wave...

Compare it to starboard and all that ****ty pumping, if you're going to do it... do it right.

Kais foil downwinding looks pretty graceful too and the Malolo board looks the right shape to control while foiling, the starboard looks too long and unbalanced

The promise of foiling is the ability to ride unbroken waves. Imagine getting out on the ocean with a 2m swell running and catching a swell. You could surf without needing a bar or reef for the wave to break on. No shore break to battle through.

The height of the mast gets added to the "wave" height so the apparent wave size is much bigger.

It remains to be seen whether the current crop of SUP foils will deliver this. We seem to be in the second age of foils and this time around they're definitely here to stay for kiting (and probably windsurfing). Hopefully SUP foiling can take advantage of the rest of the foil developments that are happening.

The Naish is a 10'4". I'm tipping the Starboard will be about the same.

Doesn't the board become somewhat irrelevant with a foil?

If the board is too long the nose will dig in when you pitch the foil down. Too short and the board wont have the glide required to generate the speed on a runner.

Actually, on non-breaking waves especially, a lot of the wave power happens under the surface.

So basically, with the foil, you surf in 3D the underwater waves.

I'm sorry but i just don't get it!, maybe i need to try one and then ill get what all the fuss is about??? or maybe it will be another fading fad like the Slate type boards from last year???....Just seems a bit strange to me.....
