wikiyachts.org/index.php/Cavalier_32
This is my idea that I have been thinking of for a while but only working on for the past week in between working and rocking a baby to sleep.
The idea behind the website is for a place that people (anyone) can add information about sailboats, mainly older ones, that will be useful to other owners or future owners.
The above web page is just a draft mock up for Cavalier 32s (I own one).
If anyone is interested in creating a page just let me know the model of your yacht and I can help setup a page with a template that you can edit.
Im hoping to create a page a week. Ill probably do the Mottle 33 (a friends) then the Compass 28.
Note that this is in a very early phase. Will it work out? Probably not. But hell why not have a crack. I paid for a year of hosting.

Sounds like a great idea to me
Brilliant! yeah I'm keen. Scanyacht 391
Hi 2bish. I created a page. You will be the first to edit so let me know how it goes. You should be able to click the edit buttons but let me know if you have any problems. Let me know if you need help uploading any photos etc.
I think the Scanyacht 391 is the Scanner 391 built by Scanyacht.

Cheers, I'll take a look over the weekend.
Bit of a duplication as there is already heaps of information on various yachts and related subjects on the Wikipedia site. Few examples below:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%26S_34
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/UFO_34
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Contessa_32
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hallberg-Rassy_40
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1979_Fastnet_race
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1998_Sydney_to_Hobart_Yacht_Race - this one lists every single yacht that competed, including yacht type and what happened to them.
There is also a collaborative effort on Wikipedia to improve Wiki articles on yachting. Looks like about 80 new articles on sailing were created in January 2021.

Yes definitely overlap with Wikipedia for the history. And very well written.
I suppose I am more thinking in terms of boat ownership and owners sharing information about their boats construction. And in an informal way. Kind of how WikiTravel is to Wikipedia.
I cant remember the definition of what justifies a Wikipedia article but it has to be of something well known and of note of something like that. So not sure a Northshore 27 or a Bounty 35 will meet the criteria to have a page. But the SS34, Contessa 32, WestSail 32 etc would.

Hi Jbarnes,
the "notability" rule in Wikipedia are met if a yacht can be referenced to reliable sources. In practice this means any yacht design with a few articles about it, or appearing in a handbook, would meet this criteria. I created the UFO 34 aricle on Wikipedia and never had any comments about notability. Likewise the Redwitch article en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Red_Witch was created in 2006 and again no editors have raised issues with notability. The Bounty 35 is listed in "The Observer's Book of Sailing Craft of Australia and New Zealand" by Peter Campbell, so this reference and one or two articles from a sailing magazine would be more than enough to create an article about the Bounty 35.
To create a wikipdia article you need to find reliable sources, which can be difficult. Your idea of owners sharing information about their boats would be classified as original research and deleted.
One hassle with Wikipedia is the sheer volume of article makes it hard to find articles, particularly of Australian yachts. I have found the "Catorgories" in Wiki helpful in identifying information, for example:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Sailing_yachts
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Sailing_in_Australia
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:1970s_sailboat_type_designs
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Keelboats
Also I would not understimate the amount of time and effort required to maintain a website you are suggesting. There are always idiots out their who are happy to damage an open website. Wiki have created bots that automatically revert possible vandalism and they are pretty busy!
