Hi all,

It seems that before buying my first boat, I should have somewhere to put her. I was thinking a swing mooring as the boat will need very little work.
A marina berth is $5000 ish P/A for the size I'm looking at, a swing is ???

That's my question, what is the cost (approx) of a swing mooring in Western Port and Port Phillip?
Are they readily available to rent?

How much is it to install one from scratch?
How long will it take?
What are the fees?
Is there a waiting list for existing ones?

The area I'm looking at is, Hastings, Yaringa, Western Port, or Morninton way. I live Close to Patterson Lakes but feel Western Port would be a better option for me. My adult daughter works with the penguins and wild birds on Phillip Island. I'd love to take her on a sail around the island.

I think that Endeavour 24 would be at home in Western Port haha.

Cheers,

Mike.

Here is a good start to answer most of your questions. More forms than you can poke 10 sticks at - it is the same in NSW. RMS NSW has on-line waiting lists on all areas assume Parks Vic would have the same.

Depends on the area - eg see here for Western Port. Ring a mooring contractor for Hastings he will advise costs and timing.

Dunno about the cost of moorings in Vic but l feel you need to look at the negatives as well as the positive aspects.

Will you be able to get out to your boat anytime you need to, keeping in mind Westernport's tide variations.
( we are originally from Vic and know WP reasonably well )
Personally l would take a marina berth over a swing mooring every day of the week, having had both in the last 9 yrs.
They cost more but are a LOT more convenient, specially when trying to get off or onto your boat when it's blowing 40 plus knots and 4-6 metre waves and or swell, as it is forecast here tomorrow.

You will sleep a lot easier in your bed at night at home knowing your pride and joy is not " dancing " on the end of a rope in storms.

Then there is the insurance question.

Swing moorings in Tassie are from free ( friends ) to 80-100 a month for hired ones.

If l had of stayed with a marina berth l would still have my boat.
Unfortunately it is sitting on the bottom, still attached to it's mooring.
Sank in 5 mts of water after taking on too much water in storms as described above.

Something to be aware of.

Ashley Koster (Aquahold) does most of the moorings in WPB, give him a call on 0411797721.
Fabulous Phil should chime in any minute as he is a denizen of WPB and will give you much better advice than me.
They come up on Gumtree also.

Cheers, Graeme

I've decided not to chime in since I've already written these things a year ago and given Mike my phone number in the early days, offered to teach him on my yacht, etc, but.....

Thanks for the replys,

R13, I've been in contact with Parks Vic and yeah they sent me a few forms to fill out. One on the boat details, that I don't have yet.

Tired, I would prefer a berth, it's safer and more convenient lots of positives. If I was looking at a more up market boat, but for a starter boat then the cost in my (limited knowledge) isn't worth it. Market value for my first boat will be under $15 K. Preferably under $10K.

Wongaga, thanks I'll get in touch with him/her in the next day or so. I thought Phill had his boat up Gippsland Lakes way.

MuttonBird, thanks for that, I'll get in touch with them.

Thanks again everyone, I appreciate it.

Mike.

Hi Phill,

there seems to be a misunderstanding here. I apologise if I've offended you or slighted you in some way. I'll send you a PM and see if we can clear it up.

Mike.
