Hi im new to the forum,
I have only just started learning to sail, about 6 months ago,,, I brought two yachts, first one was a clansman 30 which i brought form Sydney and transported it up to redland bay, restored the boat, Brought boat unseen, unable to view, due to convid 19,, then it became too expensive to to completely restore, so sold this boat, and now own a fully restored chey lee, 32 ft yacht, Got to moored up in Scarborough, I like to know, is there others sailors that are in the area, that i can learn to sail with in and around the bay,,,
The pervious owner of my yacht, is coming once a month form Bribe island, to teach me, but be good if I can hook up with others, on weekends, to learn form them as well..

Hi ilbft,

If you are in Scarborough, talk to a local boat club, such as the Moreton Bay Yacht Club mbbc.org.au. A good, free, way to learn is to crew on other people's boats for afternoon racing, if they do it up there. It might not be as good as proper tuition, but you'll get the hands-on experience it sounds like you need to get started.

Incidentally, if the motor is more than 6HP (it would be for a 32 ft boat), you need to get a recreational boat licence. Also, if you have a VHF radio, you also need to get a radio licence, although the requirement for radio licences is poorly enforced. The clubs often hold weekend courses for both licences, and they provide a good opportunity to learn.

The motor is 17 hp Yammer and I do have boat licence already, as you cant get a mooring put in place unless you have a registered yacht,, QLD rules,, about the VHF, i don't have a license for that, but as you said, it is poorly screened, but I am going to book into getting this license and also about AIS, as I have set my goals high, This time 2 years time i plan to sail to New Zealand. And i know about the sailing races they have up at Scarbrough on a Wednesdays and Saturday.. i have driven semi's interstate, and drive's excavators, but sailing a boat, is so different,, i know im am green, but not that Green,,, hopefully Ill find someone local,,, that might want to help.
