I have just returned from a short holiday which included a short stay at Paynsville. With a quick look at a few nice looking boats, as it was a quick look I only had time to jot down a few rego numbers of a couple that caught my eye. One may have been a Folkboat the others I have no idea.
I was wondering if there was a way to search the rego number to get the boats details (in Vic). Just the boat as in, make, model, and age. I would expect the owners details to be kept private.
Also If I owned a boat moored at the lakes and I had a 3hr drive to get there I would expect to be able to sleep one or two nights onboard. Is that allowed?
I've heard that marinas don't like people doing that sort of thing and it's illegal to overnight on a swing mooring. I'm happy to be wrong though.

I was up there on the weekend too Mike, I slept aboard on Fri night, one night at a jetty and one on a public swing. Usually I don't overnight in Paynesville because of been-there-done-that syndrome and because of the wash and noise of town life. However the convenience of a free hot shower each day is attractive. You do know that there are / were liveaboards in some of those marinas? Pay attention next time to the car parks versus how many vacant berths. Have a look at the yacht club(s) and see how many boats are occupied. Most will not be returning from a day's sailing; they live aboard.
Kinora is in a pen berth on Raymond Island and I occassionally stay the night in the berth after driving down from Melbourne or before driving back. Strictly, it's not allowed but it is tolerated if you are unobtrusive and respectful of the nearby residents. The owner of the boat next to mine has been living aboard his boat for some time without problems. Curtains on the windows to block the cabin lights, don't run the engine or a generator at night to charge batteries, no wild parties etc.

Now any idea if it's possible to identify a boat from the rego/ID number?
Probably not. Information about the class or type of vessel is not collected, save for above/smaller than 4.6 metres length, and whether it is power or sail boat. How VicRoads allocate registration numbers is an unimportant mystery to me, but there might be some pattern to allocation.
AMSA does for vessels registered on the Australian Ships register, but I've never seen a list for state registered vessels.
It would be dead simple to make a list and publish it on the net, but it would have to have user participation I would think and you'll have to wonder why anyone would be bothered. They won't actually be any benefit in it and unlike say Zulu Waterways, its not overly helpful for anything other than personal curiosity.
Groups dedicated to a particular type of boat will usually have a list of members' boats, but these are usually not available fro public viewing.
