A bit of background first. I started building a 30' boro motorsailer more years ago that I care to think about. At the time I was working for a firm and had a job where when the required service jobs were finished my time was then my own. I finished the hull in a couple of years. I then bought a heap of new gear for the fitting out while I had some dollars. Unfortunately the firm I worked for went belly up. Mine was a fairly specialised trade and no positions were available at this time.
I decided to start my own business taking over a lot ot the old customers. Unfortunately I didn't realise at the start that the time required to run the business grew to about 80 hours a week. As you can imagine the boat didn't get a look in.
When I retired with back problems I did a bit but then had heart problems. I now have a boat unfinished but with a heap of new gear installed. There is probably another 15-20 grand to finish it. This includes sandblasting , painting and fitting out the main cabin. The wheelhouse is pretty well completed.
Since I started the prices of yachts etc has dropped heaps. I reckon if I finished it I would be lucky to get 20 to 30 thousand for it so it does not make sense to spend any more money on it.
I am thinking of selling all the equipment fitted to it and just flogging or giving away the hull. All equipment is new and includes Yanmar 4cyl 50hp engine derated to 29bhp. Newage PRM hydraulic gearbox and shaft with prop. Full instrumentation (Autohelm) autopilot with 12v hydraulic pump. There is much, much more. Expensive switch/circuit breaker panels etc.
Does anyone have any ideas re the best way to sell this gear. Do I use Gumtree or some trade magazines. As I am now nearly 80 I want to get this all finished before my kids have to. Any info much appreciated.
Arthur.
Hi, my suggestion would be sell it as an incomplete project needing completion, listing as best as you can all the assets of the project.
Wish you all the best. ![]()
Arthur I would suggest trying to sell the whole unit first. Stripping the job is a lot of work and it means you will be dealing with a lot of yachties, 90% of whom will want to pay you bugger-all. I would suggest Facebook Marketplace with plenty of good photos.
