In the maritime museum in New Zealand they have two cats like Hokulele. We saw one of them being operated pretty sloppily as it came into berth. Not great seamanship on show.

Navigation by birds and bird types was a good takeaway from that article. Not so impressive was making replicas from fibreglass but when the society that made and operated these things is effectively gone and totally degenerated with no reliable records there is very little to go on.
