With apology's to Shakespeare, to scrub or not to scrub, that is the question.
My cat was last antifouled about 18 months ago and had a scrub about 3 months ago. I'll be looking at getting it antifouled this winter sometime but I'm wondering if it's worthwhile getting another in-water scrub again before haulout? I was wondering if the crud Gurnie's off easier if it's got a bit of mass there or does the shell come off easier if the body has been scraped off recently?
Anyone had experience with this?
I do it for a living so might have an idea. The pressure washer in the water isn't going to do anything efficiently so best method I find is a 160mm blade with rounded edges with an edge of 30degrees cut into one side of the blade. You'll slice off 90% of the rubbish with some shell base left behind that will come off easier the next day. Works great on an even surface but time consuming if there is indentation on the hull. Out of the water the pressure washer will remove most of the growth with shell base left behind which is easily removed using the same method above with a slow flow garden hose to rinse away left over shell. It really comes down to if you want to use the boat in the meantime and how clean you want it.
Also depends where you are and rate of growth. Port hacking is the worst I've seen so 3 months would be well worthwhile.
