Just use shell rimula, designed for heavy use and maintains oil pressure really well, in my experience.

Hey fellas thanks for the replies. For lydia: the engine book recommended both 30 and 40 for some brands but 40 for all brands, if that makes sense. Also I guess its better to be too viscous if I cant get the exact brand recommendation (uneducated guess). I'll post a pic of the actual page it might help explain my poor english.

Thanks UncleBob ill look into the rimula.

Bottom photo (sideways as is standard practice)
Cheers.

I'm not sure what the situation is where you are, but in Melbourne, Mariner Engineering sells(or at least last time I changed my oil) genuine Yanmar oil at prices similar to the auto-shops. Its about the only thing that is reasonably priced there.

Mate.
Go to your local Repco store and I am sure they will have in stock Penrite Mono 30 oil. Best quality oil and the recommended grade for the legendary Yanmar 2QM 15 powerhouse engine. They will have a touch screen upon which you can look up the correct oil for just about any engine you can name.

Give it a try and see if I am correct.

Like Cisco said, if you can't get the Castrol go Penrite

Does not matter what brand. Buy the cheapest 30 or 40-grade mineral mono oil available. If you can't find monograde oil then use a cheap 20-40 multigrade mineral oil for light diesel use.
I'm fairly confident Queensland has tractor dealers and farmers supply shops. You may have to buy 20 litre containers there though.

Hi, that was the position that I had adopted until I noticed the oil pressure dropping as the engine got hotter, switched to Rimula after discussing situation with a bobcat owner operator, which coincidentally used the same base engine, and oil pressure remains high.

In a V 8510 Perkins (circa 1974) I had similar problem using the oil recommended by the manual until an old time mechanic pointed out that the oil standards had been changed over time and what was say multi grade 40 in 1974 was slightly different now.
Did the research and problem solved.
Castrol mono 30

Not sure of the truth or otherwise but made sense with on older engine and synthetic oils.
Since then I have run 1973 Perkins, 1965 Gardner and 1983 Ford Lehmans
None of those run hot or at high revs.

This stuff is SAE30 and available at Supercheap and I think Bunnings. I used it in my marine gear

That is what I just put in my engine. Found it at SuperCheap in Cannon Hill. The young fella at the helpdesk was a little lost, but it was on the shelf near where he looked.

you can easily use the commonly available 15 W 30 or 40 grade diesel engine oils (even Bunnings sells these these day). Viscosity really comes into effect when the outside temperature can be freezing, not an issue in australia. Plus your old engine will be happier with higher viscosity oil anyways. The only thing to look out for is that you should not mix synthetic with traditional oils if you do not want your seals changed soon. I changed the oil on the 2QM every 200 hours though and if I used it a lot in summer even at 150 hours.

Hey thanks again for all the input fellas- I found the four stroke SAE 30 at supercheap but when I asked the oil counter guy if it was ok for a diesel he said no (I'm guessing he had no idea if you guys are useing it).
Eventually tracked down the last 20l can of truck mono in Brisbane aparently at Repco this morning- I'll update you all how it goes once I've run it for a bit. Cheers .

That looks perfect. The only thing with oils in old engines is do not use synthetic oils. That shop assistant is probably not aware that trucks have diesel engines!

no, dont mix petrol oil into a diesel engine. A diesel oil is specifically built for diesel engines and has a higher heat and wear index and also extra additives to prevent sludge build up. It will work in the short term as an emergency solution

Thanks mate- as a new boatowner I've got a weird version of confirmation bias- if someone agrees with something I say I classify it as a possibility, but if someone tells me not to do something I take it as fact and find a alternative.

Always best to look at the API spec on the oil container and find out what it means so it can be determined if that particular oil suits your engines requirements

Hi all,
have a look at coxeng.co.uk, under oil for yacht engines.
A diesel mech bloke gave me some CAT engine oil for my Bukh DV24. This oil was the ducks guts, non synthetic, of the highest spec and free!!. When I used it plenty of smoke. I couldn't believe it, how could an oil that had such high specs cause this?? Read the above article, got hold of some SAE30 mono, no more smoke. I was killing my engine with with love.

Oils aint oils, Sol

That oil is perfect for what you want, it even states that it is suitable for diesel engines, right there under the word "Convoy". Plus the Penrite website confirms it in their blurb regarding this oil just in case they made a typo on their packaging label

www.penriteoil.com.au/products/convoy-mono-truck-30-mineral

It's a very rare time that you find someone in SuperChinese that knows anything as for the most part they are shirtbox salesmen and unfortunately this is a situation found throughout the majority of retail chain outlets.

If you look at the specs of an engine oil, if it is suitable for a Diesel engine it will have a C? rating (the S? is the petrol engine rating)
You would normally look at what viscosity for your climate and C? rating your engine needs CD, CE, CF etc and use a oil that meets or exceeds that spec
if in doubt if you give the oil company tech helpline number a call as the people who answer are pretty knowledgeable
