Hi, I have just purchased a Mirror Offshore m1. I am curious about the rigging set up and would love some free pro advice. :).
Atm the rig has a for stay and two shrouds/backstays which land just aft of the mast.... Maybe 600mm. All are connected to the mast head. The backstays/shrouds pass through some spreaders located at approx 60% up the mast. The thing is that when set up and tensioned the spreaders apply about 50mm forward pressure to the mast giving it a very slight bow forward. So Ive observed that when beating into the wind the mast pumps to quite a concerning extent. My question is should the spreaders be there at all? Should they be set up with less or more forward pressure..Ie lengthen or shorten spreaders. I was thinking of adding a rear shroud to stop the pumping. Bad idea?
Im new to forum so can't post pics.
You can't get rid of the spreaders, that would be a big mistake. Usually, boats have lowers, which are side stays that lead from the same place on the deck as the cap shrouds, if swept back like yours (the caps are the wires to the masthead or nearly so) to a point just at the base of the spreaders. These stop the mast from pumping forward in its middle region. Many boat have two sets of lowers. This is usually on inline caps often found on masthead rigged boats - but lowers are really important.
If the boat is old then the rig must have survived this far and should be okay, but lowers are really common, it is very uncommon not to have lowers, so check that someone hasn't pulled them off. Look for a tang near the speaders and a chainplate on the deck.
cheers
Phil
