Here is a photo that I have pinched from Sailing Anarchy.
I rig my gennaker with tack (line) led down to my home made sprit/prodder.
Pull it tight for reach and let it out for running.
Rig the pole on the clew for running.
I have never rigged my gennaker like this before but will certainly give it a try.

Hello Gary - yes saw this on the SA website - a top boat refurbished from the late 80s.

Sorry but I didn't follow the first two lines of your text as below; but agreed with the 3rd line of text.

Rig the pole on the clew for running.
I have never rigged my gennaker like this before but will certainly give it a try.

So they have an asymm kite and the tack will always be out the end of kite pole or a bow prodder or on the bow - as on the end of a kite pole as per this photo. The clew will always be the clew and the clew will never be rigged on the end of the kite pole or the prodder or the bow.

As you say the tack is rigged to the pole - correct.

Yachts with asymm kites can only run downwind exactly square or even the other side of square by bringing the asymm kite clew to the other side - so the windward side but they don't gybe the mainsail..........so exactly similar to goosewinging the genoa downwind - so the asymm kite is goosewinged while the mainsail stays the same on the existing side. The asymm kite tack always stays as the tack, and the clew always stays as the clew but it can be either side of the boat.

regards Rob

I've seen boats with prodders mounted to one side to do the same. I have a section of a Windsurfer mast, the thick end with a block on the end that I made up to attach to the toe rail at the bow so that I could offset the tack of the cruising shute a few degrees to windward. Have not used it.

Re; The clew will always be the clew and the clew will never be rigged on the end of the kite pole

When I am running with shifting or light winds I rig the spinnaker pole to the clew of my gennaker.
Sometimes wing on wing and sometimes with just the gennaker set (in very light winds)
This is the same as when running with my genoa set.

Ramona mentions, I've seen boats with prodders mounted to one side to do the same
I am guessing that is mounted to one side of the forestay fitting.

Again back to the photo.
The pole is rigged to the mast very low. Lower than the boom in fact.
The pole is than hauled over to starboard so the center line of the gennaker is in line with the center line of the boat.
This way it set right in front of the boat not of to the side as usual.

All I need to do is add a pole ring down low on the mast and I can turn my gennaker into a spinnaker.

They swing about 30 degrees either side of the forestay. When I made the new bow roller for the SS34 I extended it forward a bit more than standard and on the centre side, inline with the forestay I welded a loop of SS and will run the tack line through that. back to the cockpit.

Gary, this is exactly how two of the old hands (says he who is in his late sixties ) from the mooring field that my boat occupies have run theirs, both with many many miles under their belts.

Hi Lazz and Uncle Bob
When you say that this is old hat, are you referring to the rig in the first post photo?
Seems that I am really out of the loop (as they say).
here is my prodder/ bowsprit rig.

Gary you could try running that prodder across the bow to get the tack to windward. Attach the base to the Stb toe rail and use a strop to fix it behind the Port pulpit stanchion so it's 30 degrees or so offset.

Brilliant idea Ramona and easily done . It mounts with only one hole through to the anchor well.
Will post photos of the finished job (one day)

thanks everyone.

Gary, yes the first pic is what I was referring to. Pole from mast forward and with downhaul and fore and aft guys to the other end.
