Hi All,
Where do people keep their boats![]()
Planning to sail on the cheaper side of life, I could either anchor the boat or pay to have a mooring ball installed with apparatus and visit her once a month but do people actually do this?
I have been told that good ventilation is critical especially if you plan on mooring her in South East Queensland like I would be.
What do sailors say the best way to go for something that cannot be trailered and dock fees are too expensive.
Much Appreciated,
Christopher
Hi Christopher, highly recommend mooring over anchoring, but to moore it you need a permit from maritime department and depends where you want to moore it there can be a very long wait for the next availability to pop up.
As for ventilation i hooked up a cheap 100mm computer fan (7 bucks of ebay) that ran 24/7 that drastically reduced mould and musty smells
Yes, I have spoken to Maritime Safety Qld and gotten the run down.
that's a great idea regarding a cheap fan, until it fails. I was thinking that a couple of Cowl Ventilators with Dorade Box's would do the trick. Does anyone swear by these providing enough air flow while away from the vessel to prevent mould and mildew?
As long as you build your dorades with the baffle high enough to keep rain water out they help. You can get vents with fans built in or as sunnycoast suggested a computer fan last a long time for little money they also help, clove oil sticks are apparently good too, as is wiping with a tsp solution, it's all part of the joy. Welcome
So a few dorades with a high enough baffle then a computer fan mounted into the tube that accesses your cabin, brilliant!
Does anyone else have a setup like this? Pictures are welcome also :)
I sent in a mooring application with blank registration and got told that I need a registered boat. When I said that I couldn't afford to moor a boat anywhere else, the officer said sorry but we can't offer you a mooring until we know the credentials of your boat.
it's a catch 22. the other thing that gets me is that MSQ aren't creating any new mooring locations. There is a fixed amount of existing locations that are being offered as they are being vacated. The population of Aus is increasing exponentially but the amount of mooring buoy locations remains the same. It makes no sense. Either halt population growth or upgrade infrastructure to support the growing population.

Just a quick observation, if you don't have a boat then you don't need a mooring, when you get a boat then you need a mooring. Regardless of what you may think, no government or other agency can create a mooring location, they aint god.

Do they tell you in Queensland what the waiting list is for any given location and where you are on it or do they even run a waiting list?
