Hi All,
I was out on the harbour with my friend today, (Sydney Harbour) that is and we were just doing a bit of a sailing on his CAV 28... I am in the process of getting my 1st boat and as in one of my previous posts I'm very much keen on the CAV 32 for a bit of solo sailing to FNQ and up thru Indo and Philippines towards the end of the year... well thats the plan anyways.
We were doing a nice steady 4knts and just taking our time and I had some across a boat in the distance to which my friend said it was a Martzcraft 35.
I'm still in the process of looking around and will most likely jump on the CAV 32 once I see one in a month as I do see these for sale more often then not as I guess they are quite popular and a number of them built... Anyhow so I did some research on the Martzcraft 35 and thought it was quite a decent boat.
PROS:
1. Much larger then the Cav 32
2. Large aft cabin
3. Centre cockpit (looks nice and protected from the elements)
4. Looks like a strong build (yes I know looks can be deceiving but I was just having a browse)
An thoughts on this boat? I don't see many of them around and I am trying to get a bit more info on them... I had a look on boat data as well for specs but nothing at this stage... Does anyone have one or sailed one of these fine looking boats. I would love some more info on her build and how she sails in light winds.
I do know from what I read is that they were built around 1990's (not sure how many) and that it is a much heavier build 6500kg dis compared to the CAV 32 which I think is around 4500+... so this might be better stability wise...
Around 50% of my sailing will be single handed solo sailing... and well I've mostly been looking at a few boats in the 32 range as I feel its the perfect size for a person to do some solo sailing. I don't think I could do a 40+ as I think it would be to big to steer. (does that make sense or sounds weird?)
Although having a boat in the 35ft range might be ideal... Again I'm still in the process and if a CAV 32 comes along in good condition I will probably get that however this does look interesting.
CON:
1. Price
Downside would be the price as a CAV 32 would be in my range of 30-40k with the Martzcraft priced about another 10k... SORRY for the rambling... I'm in my own world at the moment, but it is just so exciting searching for m first ever sail boat!!! ![]()
Benjie.
Also forgot to mention that I would like to be sailing on and offbut will most likely be sailing for the next 2 yrs... So in saying that I might like the extra room however it will only be 1-2 people max so the CAV 32 is a decent size if need be.
There is a Marztcraft which sold for 69k well was advertised for that under the heading > Martzcraft 35 Centre Cockpit in Kograh Bay.
This was just listed today;

I have not seen this boat in person, nor do I have any affiliation with the seller or Broker, just showing you the listing in case you haven't seen it.
Benno, I know a bloke in his 80s who sails a Hartley rorc 39 solo, 10t boats are no harder to handle than a 5t boat, just more maintenance

I inspected that Martzcraft 35 in Kogarah Bay. It was a nice boat, but for me at 183cm tall it didn't have headroom and the bunk in the aft cabin was too short.
YMMV depending on your height.
Another similar boat for comparison purposes is the Jarkan 10.5 which is also a centre cockpit and about the same size as the Martzcraft 35.
But both of these are going to be more expensive than a Cavalier 32.

Yes I did have a look at that today thank you... Looking and searching each and everyday but thats what I need to do when looking for a boat as most people do in my case I'm sure.
Yes it becomes a habit looking at all the new listings. I did it for nearly a year (COVID didn't help) and now have a deposit on a boat. As well as looking at listings I also found it very valuable to actually go and look at as many boats as possible. Sometimes pictures and words don't tell you what you can see within a few mins of stepping foot on a particular boat.

Oh you did.
I'm 5'7 or 174cm tall so I don't think my hight would be an issue haha but yes I do agree with you regarding the aft cabin bed does look a tad bit short... Yes I have had a look at the Jarkan aswell however there are not many around...

Haha yes Woko... Maybe I was just thinking that a larger boat would mean more work and maintenance... No boat will ever be perfect but in saying that I would like a boat that is a decent size yet manageable for myself so 32-35 range would suit me well.
I would suggest making an offer on the Duncanson 34 in Adelaide. I would start at about 15 grand. Better than a Cav 32 and far better than a Martzcraft 35.

Hi Ramona...
Can I ask why you would suggest a Duncanson 34 or think that this boat is better then the other two mentioned... Just curious, again I'm still looking around at the moment and open to peoples suggestions and feedback. Cheers ![]()
See a dated thread here on the MC35. Some comments (bottom of page 1) are not complementary about sailing speed in the light but it is clearly skipper and crew dependent to a degree, also how much loaded up a boat is for cruising rather than day racing.

The MC35 was designed by Roberts who imho was not as talented as Duncanson. The D34 will be a lot better all rounder as a sailing vessel, but won't have the internal room of the MC35. If you prefer aft cockpits the centre cockpit of the MC35 will be different.
If its your first boat, I suggest you don't get too hung up about one model v another (although it is nice to know if you're going to have the headroom you want before committing to an inspection). Get the best condition boat that you can afford. It also helps if it is local, so you can have two or three looks at it.
I found it more enlightening as to what I wanted and did not want by getting on as many boats as I could. Helped far more than looking at specs and pictures.
The specs and pictures are a good start, but doesn't replace actually stepping foot on the boats you think are suitable.

The Duncanson 34's are more of a sailors yacht versus the Martzcraft 35 sailing caravan. The Cav 32's are OK but don't have the class of the Duncanson. The Duncansons have a good build quality and I have never seen a tatty one. Only down side is they have wheel steering. Good headroom where you need it. But mostly it's that look you have when you row away and check back at a very pretty boat. When you buy a yacht buy with your heart. Yachts have to be pretty above all else.
I have a Duncanson 37 sloop aft cockpit moored Cronulla 4 sale CHEAP Has all the racing and cruising and live aboard essentials you would ever need in your life time CHEAP
Check out the book by Joe Cannon and Richard Bennett where they put the MC 35 in its roof.
The boat is down the Huon now
The text "in its roof" threw me - assume you meant "on its roof" as per the summary of the voyage as here;

There's a good prior thread here which is mostly related to the OP;
