Just curious who else out there has a Marauder 24?
We are in Perth. We bought a 1980 Marauder 24 about 18 months ago and have repainted the whole thing from stem to stern, put on a new jib (I want a new main soon), new head, new radios, compass and gradually we're improving the whole boat.
She was called "Skateaway" but we renamed ours "Starfish Enterprise"
Keen to see what others have done to the interior and exterior.
I want to replace the tiller but its an awkward shape and is laminated wood built up. Wonder who could make one.
Out boat has had the main traveller moved aft to free up space in the cockpit. I'd like a look at somone's main and jib setups.
Would be good to find some other Marauder sailors to compare notes with. Lovely little boat.
I see there's one up for sail in Perth currently in reasonably good condition. Hope she gets bought. We're often ending up last and I know we need to improve our trim and sails but would be good to see some other boats, get a bit of a class group together (even nationally so we can share ideas).
Our little family adventure in boating can be found on facebook as "S/Y Starfish Enterprise" come say hi. Later I want to sail her out at sea and further afield.
I bought one of the original model Marauders 2nd hand and had it 1988-90 (yacht 2 of 12 for me so far....hoping to stay at 12...).
Top boat but the original model was designed with a trim tab on the keel to copy the 12m Intrepid who first used this - a bridge too far for a 24 footer but well done to Kevin Shepherd for trying it. 2 models followed as far as I know - the similar boat but with the trim tab filled in, then the Marauder 725. All were out of the same mould, the 725 had the alum toerail. A long cockpit which is perfectly proportioned for the boat - the cabin length and cockpit lengths are perfect.

This link indicates first build 1975 but I think it was a few years before that they first came out - they did well in the JOG races over east here till the light brigade boats came out, and numerous have cruised up and down the east coast in suitable weather.
Great facebook site there - good that all the family can be involved - and that you have rescued it and refurbished it so well.
For your new main assume you will go fully battened - suggest 4 battens. Make sure it is not cut too full.
For your new jib what size is it? A no3 size blade or no2 or no1? Do you have a photo which can be posted? Main comment on jib sheeting is that potentially they can be sheeted closer inboard rather than out near the gunwale - so jib tracks up on the corner of the cabin and going to windward the boat should point higher - but have to be careful of choking the jib to mainsail slot as this will not be fast.
I preferred the centre cockpit traveller but certainly agree it gets in the way - would leave yours where it is.
For the tiller google "laminated yacht tiller" - many posts will come up eg
I had one for a short time R13 bought it in Sydney and sailed it to Port Stephens , she was raced in Sydney and had a pile of J24 head sails it really sailed well I am still attached the Maurader 24
Hi. I've recently been sailing with a friend on his Marauder 24 and what a lovely boat she is to sail.
He really looks after her and she has nice new sails and a clean bum and she goes really well. Just one annoying problem......there is a lot of sloppiness on the helm. Initially we assumed the cause was movement between the tiller and rudder but that has been sorted and in doing so we have realised that the problem extends further.
I am guessing it is a faulty rudder bearing. The boat has a skeg, but whether the bottom of the rudder stock is attached to the skeg ( as it is on my Cavalier 32 ) I couldn't say.
Does anybody have any experience with this problem on a Marauder or any other boat and how to locate a new bearing if indeed this is the cause of the problem ?
Thanks.
Sounds like faulty rudder bearing/s as you say - I had Marauder 24 for a few years in the 80s and agree a great boat. If your friend's boat is a standard design rudder arrangement there will be a rudder stock bearing up top under the tiller, then a second at the hull skin then a third down at the bottom of the skeg as you mention. Only way to sort it would be next slipping. This company would be well able to sort it I expect.

Bought Mystic, a Marauder 24 off zzzz in Port Stephens. Just completed a two month on the hard. Totally refurbished and looking good.
I have half a Marauder 24 - not sure whether I own the Port or the Starboard side? She is called "Whitesox", moored down at Redland Bay, QLD. She is a great solid boat, but needs a lot of TLC inside the cabin. Had a bit of damage after the rain-bomb that hit SEQ last weekend, but nothing that can't be fixed. I think she originally had a small inboard motor, but now we use a 6HP outboard. One thing I don't understand is how the bilge bump is plumbed. I have a dead or blocked electric bilge pump (that I can't quite reach) and a manual bilge pump that works. But there is water below the cabin bilge (where the electric pump is located). The manual bilge pump works for that lower water (which I can't see or access) - I was able to pump out 40 litres of this lower water our with the manual pump. does anybody have any diagrams of the guts of the Marauder that might help me understand this better? Thanks ! Peter
