After cancelling proposed cruising to New Caledonia, Vanuatu and Solomon Islands this year, we have had our mooring permit approved by Lord Howe Island Board for two weeks over Christmas and New Year - in our favourite position in Comets Hole.
We are leaving Ballina on the weather window from the 19th December with maybe a stop at Middleton Reef (weather permitting).
Are there any other Seabreezers going to be out there this year?
Lucky you.
I believe Middleton is outstanding, beware the sharks though.
I prefer North Passage at the island. A bit more protected, easier to get in and out and the transit ashore is much shorter.
Comets is good, been in there twice, for the access to Comets Hole for the snorkelling.
Yes, I like the surf from north passage - but find that the boat can sit in the current more - beam on to the swell (at least with my long keel). anywhere is uncomfortable in a SW... which we always seem to get at least once per trip there.
Here's hoping for a nice northerly run.
Och
Reach south for a bit towards Coffs then head East.
And pray the low is held out by the change from the south.![]()
I think we will hold until cyclone heads off east or dissipates...cyclones have a tendency to wander and change direction. On the upside, the swell is going to pump here next week!
When I look at Windy.tv it shows the cyclone due east of Brissie off Norfolk Is on Sunday 20th. Not Lord Howe.

Must be a female cyclone as she keeps changing her mind on what direction and where she wants to blow.
