Went past Jacobs Well today . Aside from the plethora of decrepit live aboard yachts and sunken wrecks (3) presumably as a result of the recent storms I could not believe seeing this one . A shed on floats? There is currently a wait list fir live aboard marina berths where I am at.

It's all good, as long as they're not discharging any waste into the waterways! ( As with any other craft using our waterways.)
I volunteered and VMR Jacobs Well for years, that shed looks like one of the better looking vessels down there.
Ps sitting on the balcony at the VMR there and watching the fun on the boat ramp can be an entertaining way to spend a few hours on a saturday afternoon.

Bet any money they are. Shouldn't be tolerated.

Those volunteers ( you) do a marvellous job monitoring the waterways 24/7. I am an associate (5300) and always log on when out solo when its a bit blowy.
Just about to leave for my VMR radio shift this afternoon.
Let's say it gives you a different perspective on people boating and not in a good way.
We really need to up the training of recreational boaters.
Here is a sobering thought, in my part of the world over 1/3 of logins are by mobile phone only.
A full 1/3 of people refuse to carry or use radio.
That why you always get asked for your mob phone btw.
If you leave your phone on "locate" we have software that makes your mobile phone become a poor persons EPIRB and we can get its position from it.
I was taught the "locate" thing on a safety course. We were also told to have a text written and ready to send. Boat name,MMSI,going from A too B, people onboard etc.
Is it not law to carry a VHF?

No. It is however recommended to have one on board and for the operator to be suitably licenced although it is OK for an unlicensed operator to use one in emergency .

VHF is required more than 2nm offshore open waters in Vic.
The requirement to be licensed ( apart from in a emergency ) to use a VHF radio in a recreational boat always winds me up in these discussions.
I think you should carry a VHF radio for your own and crew safety but the need to be qualified?
( l've been using communication radio equipment for nearly 50 years, either for different work positions, including LEO, or recreationally )
WHY the need for a expensive...in time and $$$...ticket when nearly other recreational or work radio licence has been dropped ( UHF and 27mhz ) when you can show previous long term usage.
I know where the money goes...thats not the issue.
I've got the handbook...well prepared to get a licence...l just begrudge paying the $120-150 licence fee...plus the required hours doing the course...plus the 3 hour return travel expense.
Sounds trival up against the cost of a boat etc etc but it just rubs me up the wrong way.
I might add l/we never babble on it when out on the water...it's on and we listen but thats it.
My girlfriend is doing her LROCP via online, I know many people are dumping there HF sets but I intend to keep mine, we were playing with it at anchor yesterday morning as she was going through the book. I will install satellite comms when the time comes to go cruising but the HF will remain as a redundancy or if there is a zombie apocalyspe or Skynet takes over.
I think self sufficiency is core to cruising, I bought a sextant as well and I am teaching myself to use that, again as a redundancy but also as a hobby, it should keep the brain active at sea and pass some time on passages.
Thread drift much?
Sorry
I wonder if that floating shed has a Radio installed
there you go.... sorted

Wow you guys get straight to the nasty stuff. Sailing has become so judgemental.
Bit rough considering most your mates in big expensive floating carvans probably still either have direct pump out toilets or simply discharge their holding tanks overboard? The very few places I have seen pump out points they are NEVER being used.....,,,
Anyways, I have a crappy little yacht with damage down one side that occurred BEFORE I purchased it. While maybe a valid observation, I am so sick of your type going past in your posh outboard driven zodiacs staring me down like I am some sort of vagrant miscreant.
You know those engines are prone to fuel contamination and those inflatable pontoons punctures? ![]()

I'm happy manually rowing a near worthless hard dinghy with reasonable floatation. ![]()

I did notice that. Are they a cheap brand? With interest rates hiking I was wondering if the rich who are still paying off their houses, cars, boats and credit cards might have started cutting corners?
Anyways, those beautiful little four stroke engines do chuck out less emissions. As I get older I might even consider acquiring one. So convenient they weigh next to nothing. I reckon I could easily chuck one on my shoulder without spilling my beer?

Is it not law to carry a VHF?
This part of the thread gives rise to an interesting issue as
in every state the law has changed with the introduction of the "primary safety obligation " ( called slightly different things in each state)
the master must answer two question at the start of every trip
1. Is the vessel suitable for voyage to be undertaken
2. is the vessel properly equiped and crewed for the voyage
This second question is in addition to mandated equipment
so in Qld , no mandated VHF but if going out of mobile phone range ( remembering different networks have different ranges) the failure to carry a properly fitted VHF would be considered a failure in respect of the second question
recently for trip from Hobart to Qld I sat down and made notes of my consideration then went out and brought some extra things
Obligation satisfied
the world has changed
OK, this has got to take the cake.
That's a lot of houseboat for 20 grand...
