The voyage to Lord Howe from Sydney would be interesting in the prevailing currents as per the link below. The first 100nm would be ok but the wrong wind wcould create sea state havoc from then on.

I think I would go to Forster/Seal Rocks and then head out as a northerly wind built hoping that it would die off or go south when I got to the other side of the eddy.

Any other ideas on getting from Sydney to Lord Howe in these conditions (apart from Qantas Link)?

On my first attempt in 2009 we had a 3 knot north east setting current taking us towards Lord Howe and a 25 gusting 35 kt noreaster against us. With the wind against current they were the worst sailing conditions I have ever experienced. Worse than the much stronger winds Havefun and I had last year or that we had going to Southport last July in the Sailors with Disabilities Lyons 54.

Looking at that current chart indicates to me that due east from Sydney is the path of least resistance.

Do you have this as one of your favourite weather sites? Click on "earth" bottom left which brings up a menu with "Mode" choice Air or Ocean which changes with the click of the mouse.

Also right click anywhere to get lat/long and wind direction and speed.

Wonder how much the direction changes of the current are affected by the sea mounts.
