Dunk island has always been a good place to stop for a rest or a couple of days for people cruising north for the winter, There is lots to see and do and there is the resort to visit and spend your money if youve got some to spare.
Cyclone Yasi went thru that area late january and the eye of the Category5 fury passed right over the island and moved on to Mission beach. I think everyone knows what happened then.
Three and a half months have passed and while cruising north i anchored at Dunk for an overnight stay and to go for a walk around the Island as ive done in past seasons .
Going ashore i was not prepared for the damage that i saw! I knew there was damage but not this much!!
Anyone deciding to stop there this season will be dissapointed as i was and more than likely alarmed at the signs posted by the resort all around the beach demanding you not land there.
I took some pictures and even though they show damage they dont display the utter hopelessness or despair felt while i walked around below the high tide mark









Hopefully mother nature provides for a rapid recovery but its gonna take several years

The many professions looking quality pictures speak for themselves. Clearly the partying, and grogging is now over on Dunk Island. On the bright side, we will see o lot less VS going around in the region for a very long time.
