Interested to hear that there is now a double handed class in this year's Hobart and also that there is a Northshore 38 from Adelaide "Inukshuk" competing. Not that NS 38s are any strangers to the Hobart including the 98 in which there were three all of which finished.

None of the Northshore 38's finished the 1998 race, they all retired.

See what keel modifications they made.
NS 38 does not stability otherwise.

Sorry about that. Last time I believe an agents blurb without checking it.

Yes I presume that they have the optional lead boot fitted. I will ask but I might not get a reply since they are at sea at the moment

So this is the reply got to your query.
" ... here since Rob's at sea. None. Stability index 124.9 Comfortably over the S2H minimum cutoff .With all the other things to worry about for qualification, it was nice that the stability test was never one of them
."
I too was under the impression that the standard ns38 no longer complied with the stability requirements. Perhaps I was wrong or perhaps the two handed regulations are different which seems doubtful.

Pretty sure you need more that the standard shoe

Another North Shore 38 owner who apparently knows that their draught is not the standard 1.84 replied "...they have a 2m draught points to the 8inch boot has been added as many of the 38's have."

Interesting the RSHYR page shows the draft as 2.0m but their IRC certificate shows it as 1.89m and the ORCI as 1.941m - must be a rounding error ![]()
There is some impressive footage of NS38 Sienna on this you tube about the 98 hobart. She is standing by Stand Aside.

Draft measurements are most difficult to take and most inaccurate
Even Sydney 38 draft measurements are all over the place
Its a 2 handed race to Hobart coinciding with the RS2H, Participants aren't eligible for the win. May as well cruise a fleet of multihulls down at the same time and award prizes for fastest times.

more than likely due to bad measuring our mainsail hoist height was out by 600 mm plus water lines wrong

Damn site harder to go down with only two on board and highly unlikely to take out fastest times so seems totally Petty to actually disqualify them. Maybe the addition of a class was an attempt to address a lack of participants in light of covid x

Sorry should have been more clear, just poor measurement

21 minute mark.
I hope this footage doesnt bring back some terrible memories for some people.
Very courageous crew on Sienna, true sailors , awesome seamanship
Double handed racing is getting more and more popular in Europe. There are new races and designs coming out every year. As the Hobart is the biggest offshore race down there it was only a matter of time.
There was a lot of arguing about them using autopilots so they should not be eligible for the overall win, or even be allowed. I guess they lost.
There was the largest number ever of double handed boats in the Fastnet last time.
It has been discussed already on here I think.
There is a lot of arguing going on and I think that's why there are so many new races for the double handed class in Europe.

Thanks for posting, Madmouse. I had not seen that particular account. I think I will get the last words spoken in the documentary inscribed on a plaque and have this mounted on the bulkhead.

Yes great quote and spoken by a man who did his utmost to design boats that were very strong and have truly stood the test of time.
