I've been employing strong arm tactics with my Muir vertical windlass, motion dynamics has a 600w worm drive combo with a choice of ratio. I'm leaning towards the 100:1 @ 15 rpm which will give me 5.250m/ minute chain speed, what say you brains trust ?
Hi Woko, I looked it up, and my 1100 watt windlass has a rated retrieval speed of 18 meters per minute. So the figures you quote would be a bit under a third of that. But have you factored in the diameter of the gypsy, that would affect the retrieval speed wouldn't it?

2bish, 18m/ minute! To ascertain the chain speed I marked the chain and manually wound it in at 1rev per 4 seconds ie 15 rpm. The windlass is an older Muir storm chromed bronze number. I have a feeling that the bronze gypsy would appreciate not being forced to drag 10mm chain at light speed. Cheers
I guess that figure is under low load, so in real life, it's probably a bit slower. If you're concerned about the gypsy handling any faster, and you're happy with the speed it'll operate at, then that's the prudent way to go. You could call Muir's factory in Kingstion and have a chat about that.
Let us know how it all performs over time, it looks like a good unit. Love to see some pics/words of the conversion process as you go.
The Muir specs have it at 14m/min, thats with a 1000w motor at 80:1. The motor I have is serviceable but the worm drive is shot, the Italian made worm drive that is the only make on the planet that has the input shaft size for the motor, cost more than a new windlass, hence the work around. From the list above the 50:1 doubles the speed which is obvious but the n-m is the same an that don't make sense. I might split the difference and get the 80:1 job, 20% faster and if I cook the motor I can fit a bigger one as the input shaft on the worm drive is standard
