Hi all, ive recently purchased a yacht which has just recently came in from overseas. It has butane gas bottles. i am going to get new gas lines and get it to aussie safety standards. Can you get butane filled up in Aus or do we swap over to propane? If so will the stove and gas hotwater run of propane?
Cheers
Both should work fine. The only difference could be a slight yellowing of flame or incomplete combustion. If this happens then the burner will need alterations made. Gas pressure in lines should be maintained at 2.75 Kpa to a maximum of 3Kpa.
Went through a similar issue when preparing to go to New Caledonia where (at the time) you couldn't get propane. Before setting sail, I tested my propane stove on butane (same regulator) and couldn't tell the difference in time when boiling a similar amount of water. Butane is not much chop in cold climates (as it needs a higher temp to boil off) so I'd be leaning towards propane. When doing my research, I was told that in Europe some home owners use butane in summer and switch to propane in winter. Not sure what's involved in the change over, but I don't think it would require the swapping out of jets in all the appliances. Cheers.
