Hi All - just replaced my solar vents and went with butyl to bed them in as they are thru-bolted. The problem (I think) is that the base is made of plastic and so while there is compression where the bolts go through, in between there isn't and so I'm getting leaks. Just wondering if anyone else has had the same experience and if so, could suggest a different solution?
Thanks

It sounds like you need to have more sealant in the areas between the bolts. Did you seal just around the bolts, or all around the vent flange? A photo would help.

I had butyl over the whole base and extra around the machine screws.
Can't get to the boat at the moment but basically as I tightened the bolts, the plastic between the bolts would lift a bit - I'm guessing butyl would squeeze from around the bolts to areas of less resistance and then the plastic would bend - things like winches aren't a problem as a metal base won't deform under pressure.
