Have the plan to fit one of these into the fuel delivery system of a Sole Mini 2 diesel late 80s in case of runaway, at the easily and quickly accessible filter. Thought there would have been a valve available to thread in directly to the filter head output port then the fuel line would utilux clamp to the valve output. Is anyone aware of such a valve? Or a better solution than the Ballard? Realise it is not a marine valve. Thanks.

Delphi / CAV is one of the few pipe things where its UNF rather than BSP or NPT.
I got one of these www.whitworths.com.au/three-way-fuel-tap-1-4-npt-forged-brass.
Lots of hose barb fittings and hose clamps to set it up but I use the third way to return fuel back to the tank for polishing.
The middle position is off to both.
I have a cheap inline pump that is only used for polishing. It doesn't effect the flow to the engine when off and I can use it to bleed air when required.

Thanks John. Cav Delphi 296. Yes I saw one of those and the barb fittings at WW this afternoon - but was surprised that they didn't have a basic stop valve. I was there to get an inflatable life jacket crotch strap and hadn't searched on-line for valves before so was a tad unprepared......

R have you considered a 1/4" gas cock ? A unf to bsp union & a bsp hose tail would do it
re reading you op, in a runaway situation you need to be able to shut the air off as a runaway will be running on its own sump vapour/ oil. A cock on the filter would be useful just the same

Thanks Woko yes it looks like that's the way have to go as finding a 1/2" unf threaded valve is impossible. Agree re the air filter will devise a way to quickly block its inlet also.

I have no experience with a runaway diesel but I was under the impression you had to suffocate them to bring them under control

That's correct engines like the Detroit 2strokes were prone when worn, big Loud motors being pushed to the limit. If you were to flog a worn out little old yacht motor it might take off. It's good to have a plan be to shut a engine down for various reasons, something like a ping pong bat to hold over the air intake, don't use the like of a towel it will get sucked in and still let air pass, talking from 1st hand experience

Found one as per here - US;

www.mcmaster.com/ball-valves/pipe-size~1-2/thread-type~un-unf-sae-45-/

Am chasing via apparent Aust agent;

Thanks again John and Woko for the clues to this result.

Note that the similar Ryco filters are also 1/2 20 UNF.

Great apologies I was barking up the wrong tree with that valve - the Aust agent for that mcmaster valve quoted but the cost was completely untenable. It is a CPS valve and the Aust CPS office advises that they are not for diesel...........I am not sure why..........

I have ordered a Futomo F101N oil drain valve from oilvalve.com.au (their advice as per their HQ in Japan is that they are suitable for oil, petrol, diesel, water...) and have a 10mm output nipple. Will send photos in a couple of weeks when it is installed. If I change to a Ryco R2132UA as strongly suggested by Ramona this valve will still suit.

Have cut up a piece of 40mm decent hardness foam to put over the air intake.

A story I was told when being taught to rev tune GM for balancing the injectors that a mechanic had died after a two stroke GM ran away on the test bench. He bent over to get the block of wood to choke it and his stomach or chest got too close and the blower had enough force to drag his insides into the engine before it stopped.
May have been a story to frighten the Apprentices, but it left a last impression on me.

Thanks I think I may not be able to unsee that image, my little jimmy has a flap to shut the air off behind the silencer ( ha) but I think I'm going to be wary of it just the same !

I thought Ramona was suggesting a Chinese Racor 500 filter, quite different to the Ryco. The Ryco is very similar to the Delphi.
Oh I see now that Ryco was mentioned in one of Serb's threads so I might have it wrong.

Certainly not. I changed both systems on two yachts to the Chinese Ryco. I had a Racor 500 on one and a Cav on the other. The Ryco R2132UA is a far better quality bit of kit.
