Hi

About to go down the rabbit warren of replacing my gas system in my sailboat. Wondering if anyone has a copy of the standard I could borrow. I want to plan the system then have a plumber do the installation.

I have found there aren't too many plumbers around me that have in depth familiarity of the standard to be able to plan a new system.jack

Try your local library. I believe Victoria offers free read only copies of select Australian Standards.

That truly is a multilayered and windy rabbit hole you're headed down. Might I suggest you instead get a show a gas fitter your ideas and then the gas fitter can adapt and quote the system for you. In the end he is going to be the person responsible for the installation, and if you do have concerns about the work that's been carried out you could contact the inspector/authority to answer your concerns and likely come look at it for you. The gas fitter will issue a compliance certificate to yourself and the authority so will all be on record. I personally will not share the standards as should the person go ahead and do the installation themselves and blow it all up there is potential for the coroner and authority to point the finger at me in some form. It's a complicated code to get a head around.

Nothing wrong with someone wanting to understand the law / the rules. Otherwise we're back to the middle ages where the priests wanted the printing presses smashed because it meant that ordinary people could read the bible and question the interpretation.

That's very true and I agree, but having been in the situation previously and placed in a very awkward spot I'm not going to do it again. There are places online where the codes are available for free if someone was to do some digging though.

Australian Standards should be free. As an Australian I would like to know whether any work done for me agrees with the standard. I can read. Or a boat I am purchasing passes the relevant standard. The standards should be available and not used as an instrument to simply generate money for regulatory authorities.

That'd be great. Expensive in my trade! Having said that if you do have a chance to read them they're very difficult to understand without a grasp of the practical side of gas fitting. You will find free copies online if you dig hard enough.
